So I’m in the beginning stages of upgrading to my “final” tank (for now). 60x30x24 mixed reef heavy sps. 50 gallon sump. Curious if everyone thinks I would be able to house

Looking to add
1 Purple Tang
1 Black Tang
5 or 7 Chromis
Melanurus Wrasse or Leopard
Pair of Mandarin
Cleaner Shrimp

Current stock which will transfer
1 Yellow Tang
Pair of Clowns
Midas Blenny
Four Stripe Damsel
Diamond Goby

I was looking at a 72x30x24 build but I think I rather go 60” for my space. Thanks!

1. Purple Tang- Adding two Tangs of the same genus (both Yellow and Purple are Zebrasoma) is a bit of a risky proposition. People have done it for sure, but I’m not the best person to ask. If you really want to have a second Zebrasoma go ahead once you’ve researched it well enough and the experts here say okay, but if I were you I’d get some kind of Foxface. One Spot, Foxface Lo, Magnificent, Bicolor, any of the smaller Rabbitfishes.

2. Black Tang- That’s a Third Zebrasoma, which complicates things even more. I would suggest a Bristletooth tang (genus Cthenochaetus), like a Yellow Eye Kole, Square Tail, White Tail, or Tomini.

3. 5 or 7 Chromis- People have kept them before without them killing each other off, so I suppose if you add 6 or more it could work. However, they’re prone to uronema and I’d still be worried that they’d kill each other off. Ask for more opinions.

4. Melanurus or a Leopard Wrasse- Good. You could do both. Just keep in mind Leopard Wrasses are a difficult fish whereas Halichoeres (which the Melanurus belongs to) are easy.

5. Pair of Mandarins- Just make sure they’re a mated male / female pair. I think you might even be able to mix species of Dragonets, I’ve seen it done before.

6. Cleaner Shrimp- Good.

Why not try some angelfish? All of the Centropyge would be suitable for your tank, you could probably even do one medium sized angel or maybe a pair of Genicanthus angels (Spotbreast, Bellus, Watanabei with Watanabei being the smallest). Genicanthus are the most reef safe genus by far.

If I were you I’d do:

x1 Yellow Tang (8”)

x2 Ocellaris Clownfish (aggregate 6”)

x1 Midas Blenny (6”)

x1 Four-Stripe Damsel (2.75”)

x1 Diamond Goby (6”)

x1 Yellow Eye Kole / Square Tail Bristletooth / White Tail Bristletooth / Tomini Tang (6-7”)

x1 Melanurus Wrasse (4.5”)

x1 Leopard Wrasse (5.5”)

x1 Marine Betta / One-Spot Foxface (8”)

x2 Watanabei / Spotbreast / Bellus Angelfish or x1 Lamarck’s Angelfish (9”) (aggregate 12-14” for 2 fish of the Watanabei / Spotbreast / Bellus)

x1 Green Mandarin Dragonet (3”)

x1 Ruby Red Dragonet (3”)

And then instead of Chromis I’d just do a trio of Pajama Cardinalfish, but if you really want Chromis then make sure they’re all healthy.

i think should be fine when i first set up my tank i added 3 purple tangs and a blue at the same time all around the same size and about a month later moved my yellow eye kole tang which was a complete monster he fit right in and is alot less aggressive still think hes the king of the tank as he is the biggest tang in there besides the blue oh and also added 4 chromis have 2 now the biggest two killed the other 2 runts

Those are the dimensions of my dream tank.

I would remove the 4 stripe damsel. Nasty genus of fishes. I do love damsels, but the striped and domino group are big and mean.
