now that the weather is getting nasty (just drove to work this morning in 2inches of snow), lets share out power outage tips to keep our tanks going.

i'm still looking for a cost effective way to run a single nano-stream pump (i think it pulls around 7w?) on battery power.

most places around here have gas water heaters, so what i've done in the past is put very hot water in zip lock freezer bags and then float them in the tank or something.

battery operated air pumps? junk or work like they're supposed to?

one guy in our area who lived in a shack, with very poor insulation in the walls, would always put ~1" styrofoam around his tank and it worked like a charm. not sure how he got it to hold onto the sides of the glass though.

feel free to share your tips/tricks....

for a nano stream, i would get a ups computer back up power supply, that should run the 7w for hours

ReefCast has some pretty good shows on how to survive a power outage. In the summer and in the winter. Check them out.:)
