So I'm thinking of going to a new and a bit bigger tank. I'm looking at going to a 40g breeder (currently have a 20g tall). We just don't have room for anything much bigger than that in our house as we already have a 65g tall FW that my wife would NEVER let me convert, lol.

So here's an outline of how I would like to do it and need some advice. Pro's/Con's/do's and Dont's.

First, the tank would go where the existing 20g tall is. I have a 10g QT that has been running just as long as the 20g. All it has in it is a CB shrimp that's been in there for a year and a half. It is not nearly as kept up with as my main tank but I try to keep it hospitable for the shrimp. It could be used as a temp holding spot for the fish and inverts and even the corals for a short period of time I think.

OK, so here's my live stock as of now in the 20g. 2 Wyoming white clowns, 1 bicolor blenny, 1 high finned red banded goby with pistol shrimp, a green banded goby, 5 nassarius snails, 4-5 hermits, and other various snails.

Corals: Candy cane, Birds nest (started bleaching a couple months ago but is hanging in), Small leather coral, ricordia mushroom, numerous palys and zoas, some leftover GSP and some leftover clove polyps, pulsing xenia and a feather duster.

So, my plan would be is to get my neighbor and move the 20g over a bit to put the new tank in. I'll set the new tank up with new live sand, some new cultured LR. I'll then start to pull my existing LR out of the 20 a piece or 2 a day and scrub them in SW to get rid of any existing algae but not remove any of the beneficial things. Once the scape is set-up in the new tank, I would then start to transfer existing live stock. If the new rock is truly live, and I use some of my existing LR, would I be able to do this over a 4-5 day period? I'll use my current skimmer (CPR bak pak), upgrade my HOB filter to be able to hold more media (chemi pure elite and purapads) than my current one can. I appreciate any input. This probably won't take place until around the first or second week of Dec. Any and al input welcome! Thanks in advance!

I think that sounds like a great plan...that's kind of what I plan on doing when I move at the end of my lease.

As long as the rock Is LIVE should be ok. I have moved everything from a 75 to a 90 with no trouble. The 90 had all new dry rock but I used my rock in the sump. If it were me I would probably just use all new rock scape like you want and just throw your rock in sump. I took mine out of sump over a few months

honestly, when I have moved a tank I do it all in one day and have never lost anything...less stressful then dragging it out over a couple days, plus you will be robbing the 20 of bacteria by taking all the rock out over a 5 day period

just setup the 40 with new sand, maybe around 30G's of new saltwater then move all the rock/coral over and then the fish last...top off the 40 with water from the old 20G

I agree you should be fine. With the new sand you will have some die off if its live sand so expect so cyano and/or diatoms to bloom in the new tank. You could add some Dr. Tim's one and only or some Biospira just to be safe. Add it when you add in your fishes.

I agree with Veselym on the water. Definitely use some of the old water and maybe some of the old sand to seed the new sand. Then keep an eye on your parameters and watch out for any spikes. Have some fesh saltwater ready in case you see a spike in anything.
