Tank temperature too high always

Hi guys,

I have a Redsea 425XL 112g reef tank and it always seems to be overheating. The temperature naturally creeps up to 28C/82.4F even when I don’t even have a heater connected.

my room temperature is only 20C/68F.

I am running the following:
Red Sea skimmer 600
3500L/h Pump
UV steriliser with pump
Clarisea filter 3
CO2 scrubber
Redsea led90 x2

I keep having to put a fan blowing into the sump to control the temperature. What is causing my temperature spike and what do you recommend I do to make sure it doesn’t go into the danger zone?

A 2-3 ° swing is normal.
My nano cube runs 82-84 with no issues and its all acros.

Also how big is the UV unit? They can be another heater to thè system depending on flow.

The lowest it ever goes to is 80.5F

Thats the temp my frag system runs and I have no issues.

The UV unit is a TMC Vecton 600. Do you think I should turn that off?

You can turn it off for a day or 2 and see if thats where the heat is comming from.

My 20g nano cube is almost 7 months old.
It has run 82-84 since day one with no issues.

Your lights + UV + pumps are probably adding up to 200 W of heat to the tank continuously, still going that high from 68 F ambient seems odd. Maybe add a quiet fan to the room to aid in air circulation?

I have run 80-82° for many years with no issues.
A small fan in the sump will lower temps by up to 3°.
I ran one in my 120 sump in the summer to keep my temp at 82 when I was running halides.

I’ve seen many fans with mixed reviews. Have you got a link to the kind of one you used?

I am a Tunze guy so I run the tunze fan #7028.900.
I also ran a home depot 10" clipon fan that worked well and its alot less than the Tunze.

I have fans in my sump which are controlled by a controller (Apex). They are inexpensive 6” clip on fans. They will eventually expire (being over a sump is not a good place for them). But they do keep the tank temp at 77-78 degrees.

It will be adding heat to the tank along with the other powered equipment.

I used three fans in my tank. A very common solution, but remember it will increase the evaporation from your tank. It is all the equipment running plus lights that adds the heat energy. If fans won't do it, then you may need a chiller.

You don't need to go real pricey......start with some cheap high volume ones first. Don't forget to have one blow the air out of your sump area....just blowing on the sump in an enclosed area won't help that much.

On my tank without a chiller, I use this USB fan from Amazon. It works nicely. The back of my stand is completely open, so the heat can easily escape. Drops the temp about 2 degrees, but with extra evaporation as mentioned above.

I'd look at replacing your pumps. Pumps can heat up water. Specially if they crap out.

Reading your original posting it still sounds like you have something in the tank that is running hot to keep the temperature in the tank at that level compared to the room temperature. Do you have any resticted flow with your return pump at all? I had a pump in the past that ran hot when restricted too much. Just an idea. Feels like a band aid to cool something off if you don't know what is causing the temperature swing first.
