Tank Temps

Ok just curious as to what temp you all keep your tanks and what your reasoning is for those temps. Is it out of necessity because of equipment or is it because you believe it best.

Mine averages between 76-79 deg throughout the day. I don't have a chiller only fans.

I have my controller set for 78. I keep it here in case of temp swings from the heat of summer and I forget to turn the AC on or, like the other night, a power outage for about an hour and it dropped 1.4*, due to the cold.

Mine runs anywhere from 77-81. Your temp is fine, ideally I shoot for no higher than 80 but when its 112 outside you do what you can. I ran a chiller for years but without it vented outside it just heated up the house.

I had the same issue so I took the chiller outside now it hardly comes on. Temps is from 78-80

We keep ours at 76.5. I personally don't like the tank above 80 and this gives room to play during the dog days of summer. However, with two canopy mounted fans, 78 is about the peak.
I have read studys that suggest coral growth slows and even ceases below 76 degrees. I used to maintain ours at 75. While our corals still grew, I brought up the temp for this reason.

Under 80 in summer (occasionally gets to 81) and above 76 in winter is fine with me. I don't use fans, or a chiller. I just let it ride with the seasons.

I keep mine at 76 right now to give me some swing room...although my LEDs don't heat up the tank at all. LA says to keep most of my wrasses from 72-78, so I try to stay right in the middle. My temp generally fluctuates only half a degree throughout the day.

77.0 to 77.2 I like to keep it stable. I find it keeping with no swings I get better growth rate from my corals.

I have always been under the impression is that it is not as important what the actual temp you keep your tank at, but you should always attempt to keep it stable. I keep mine at 77.6 give or take .1 degree, with the use of a controller. I was taught that it is the varying temp swings that can throw your tank out of wack. I don't know if this is actually true or not, but it makes logical sense to me.

I keep mine at 78.8 It has yet to move from that point more than 0.1 degree to kick the heaters on and off.

That should be fine. I think it is on the cooler side of average for aquariums, but I doubt the critters mind.


I keep mine at 78.0 +/- 0.1 with the use of a controller.

i keep mine at 78.
but since were on the topic of temps. .i use a calibrated thermometer and i found my heater to be 2 degrease lower than the set point.even though the controller says 80 im only at 78,has anyone checked there temps. with a calibrated thermometer.

i use a 500 watt blue line heater controller.

Most of our tanks run around 78-80 during the summer and 72-74 during the winter. We also allow up to a 2-3 degree swing per 24 hours...we actually prefer a bit more swing in our prop tanks since we ship a lot of corals...we have found these temps/swings tend to help the corals be better prepared for shipping. As others have said stability is more important than the actual temp...big swings are what will get you in trouble. Anything from about 70 to 85 will be OK for most of what we keep, but obviously be right at either end of the spectrum does not leave much cushion in the event of a temp spike or drop.

My tank stays at 78. I just watched my tank and seen what was the hottest it would get. And set my heater at that temp so it stays very stable. But I keep my house at 72 all year so that helps too.

I keep mine at 79. I am in NJ and it has been very cold since last 2 days. My sump and heaters are in the basement.
I see the temp fluctuate from 78 - 79 .. . I have 1100w heater(s) maintaining it..

77.4 is where I have mine set. It will dip to 77.3 and rise to 78 on a mild winter day. Summer time I'll keep it around 80. I think temp fluctuations are overhyped. Many natural reefs see much higher temp flux than our tanks.
