My apartment stays pretty warm, which keeps my tank around 79.8 degrees. I want to get a Blue Hippo Tang (Dory) and they say the recommended temps are between 72-78. How can I lower my water temp? I even turn my heater temp down and it still reads around 79. Any suggestions? Also, would it be good to grab a cleaner shrimp in addition?

I keep my tank at 80. No issues. Hippo doesn’t mind it one bit.

without a chiller, you can try a clip on fan blowing at water surface in tank or sump. That may help, but a chiller is the only “for sure” way I know if. But 79.8 is still ok in my opinion.

Any tips in caring for the hippo you’d like to share? I hear they get ick very easy.

Sorry but you shouldn't get a Hippo tang with a 75 gallon. They get quite large. 150 or 180 gallons probably.

I'd recommend a smaller tang if you have your heart set on one. Like a tomini

Understood. I’ve been doing research. My LFS has a juvenile for $60. I definitely plan on upgrading my tank in the next 2 years. It won’t outgrow my 75G in that time.

I keep mine well feed and that’s About it lol. They do get big so either plan for upgrade or rehoming. Smallest tank for a full grown is at least 175, and that’s still small for a 12” fish. It’s an active and pretty fish.

I was surprised how much a small fan in the sump area lowered my 75G system temp. You won’t need a chiller if you’re already that close. And as others have said, current temp is fine.

I’m always cautious about planning a later upgrade and basing stock on the planned upgrade. Buying clothes thinking they’d fit after my diet has never worked for me!

Definitely planning to upgrade. The one at my LFS is very small
