Tank Transfer Method of Quarantining Fish

Not my favorite, I know it's probably an unpopular opinion but I like a very roomy tank and using cupramine and prazipro for 4-6 weeks.

Start the tank with bio-spira and marinepure media.

Worked wonders for everything from cardinals to a GP, Bandit Angel, two Achilles, etc...

Personally felt moving the fish often was stressful. IMO reducing stress is the first goal.

I feel the same about having to move the fish so frequently would be stressful. Thanks for your response.

BTW : Wrote this years and years ago, it's my personal QT procedure.

Like I said I trusted it enough to put even very $$$$$ fish through QT with it. I only lost one fish (well three of) in QT doing this. Which was a Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse (impossible to keep fish).

Even super delicate fish like a Copperband and Achilles went through it. Picky angels right from the diver to captivity (my QT tank) like a Bandit Angel also went through it and started eating.

I've done both over the years. Lost more fish to copper than TTM and feel it's less stressful but to each his own. You'll get opinions for both sides.

People have used it with success, but copper + prazi is more comprehensive and arguably less stressful (as well as easier). It is better than no QT. A copper QT that is cycled shouldn't have issues and if a fish dies in there, I doubt it was the copper anyways

Thank you, good information to review and consider!

Has anyone used this method when quarantining new fish?
Yep. I used to exclusively use TTM. It can work well, but does have some downsides.

What I did was about 2 weeks of transferring every 72 hours, with Prazi-Pro twice about a week apart. If done properly (many people seem to screw it up :) ), it will treat ich. With the Prazi, you are also mostly covered for worms/flukes. Also, it is my opinion that after 2 weeks, you would know if the fish has velvet...so you're arguably covered there too.

The downside is having to catch the fish, having 2 or more tanks and sets of equipment that needs set up and dried before each transfer, and having to worry about ammonia (you may have to change water, depending on bioload and tank size).

I do Prazi as well for flukes and do 2 H2O2 baths 6 days apart which is supposed to treat velvet. Worked like a charm for the 30 fish I have in my DT.

I also did two runs (3 fish total) recently of Hybrid TTM = TTM with two 150ppm H2O2 baths 6 days apart.

Worked out well for me too.

Yep. As long as you’re diligent about not cross contaminating the 2 tanks and follow a strict schedule of transferring every 72 hours or less it works really well.

I have used it a lot.

It can be done well or done poorly.

I think catching fish with nets is not ideal... I use a soft silicone strainer... nets damage the slim coat and can catch on fins. You also need to be confident you can catch and transfer the fish quickly before they knew what happened. A panicked fish being chased is a stressed that may injure itself.

They should still have hiding spots.. wrasses that sleep in the sand should still have sand.. just use new sand every transfer.

Ammonia seems to have been a problem for some people... too many fish.. too small of a container.

It doesn't work well for insanely panicky jumpy fish... like diamond gobies and jawfish. Often you end up picking them off the carpet. Some fairy/pencil wrasse can be this way or dartfish.

It takes a bunch of salt/water/time, you can't be late in your transfer.

Unless you are doing some dips in between and prazi, typical tank transfer does not address all problems.
