Tank Transfer Method

What do you think about transfer on day 8 and then 3 week observation period since ICH is max of 7 days and Velvet is 4 days?

  • I like treating for 10 days before transferring because it affords a little more wiggle room. IMO; 8 days is cutting it too close.
  • I would prefer a 4 week observation period afterwards, because 30 days is the longest a fish can mask symptoms of ich or velvet if they had been exposed to subtherapeutic copper. We can only assume the same holds true for CP. This is an "insurance policy" just in case therapeutic levels were not continuously maintained for the entire 10 days.

How bout 8 days and 4 week observation. The observation period is the safety net.

If we get one legit failed report, we'll move to 10.

Agree???

Then in observation period make sure you get two rounds of prazipro and maybe some antibiotic therapy. I wonder if prazipro or antibiotics could have a masking affect on either parasite?

I have settled on a 14 day copper treatment with a transfer to a clean tank following it. Seems to work very well for me.

The goal for anybody is what works! My personal goal is to limit the time, money, headache, backache, meds, saltwater, etc...spent on QT and Treatment.

I'm a logical person and i'll follow evidence to wherever it leads me. The current studies we have seem to be accurate for treating fish and fallow periods. Just like Science...our treatments, fallow periods, medication dosage, etc need to evolve when new information is learned. Sometimes it's old information that needs a closer look. In this case, it was the life cycle of ICH and Velvet. I like to live on the dangerous side which is why I'm personally doing an 8 day 40-60mg treatment with CP and 1 transfer on day 8 to a clean sterile non-medicated tank for a 4 week observation period.

According to all the current studies...ICH doesn't stay on the fish more than 7 days....and Velvet 4 days. I'm not saying it's impossible, but as far as we know right now, it hasn't happened. So until I have a fish break out in the non-medicated observation tank in that 4 week window...I'll continue this regimen and document it each time.

I have a new tool to help aid with my own studies and observations that I'll be documenting shortly.

I'm finally getting my TTM setup going. I went out to buy a new air pump from Petco (they have like 70% off air pumps right now btw) and I'm kind of shocked at how much spray a big air pump produces. Seems like I'm going to have to be extremely careful about aerosol transmission between the two tanks.

FYI; coarse air stones aren't as bad as those fine mist ones.

I can't seem to find the information in the OP about how much time needs to pass for ich. The schedule is excellent but I can never make the first window 72 hours (because Fish tend to arrive in the morning and I can only work on Fish at night). As far as I can tell it's 12 days total? Is this schedule good or should I do an extra transfer on day 14-15?

3/21/2017 - Day 1 - add fish (10 am)
3/23/2017 - Day 3 - Transfer (11 pm)
3/25/2017 - Day 5 - Prazi
3/26/2017 - Day 6 - Transfer (10 pm)
3/29/2017 - Day 9 - Transfer (9 pm)
3/31/2017 - Day 11 - Prazi
4/01/2017 - Day 12 - Transfer (8 pm) to final tank

You'll want to do an extra transfer the night the come in. That way you can start in the evening without extending the QT period an extra three days. So, they come in on day one in the AM, that night when you are able to do it each time, you'll do a transfer, then you can resume the schedule as listed above.

Ah ok. I was planning on letting it go two days (so the first one is 60 hours) and using that shorter one to get me on a night time schedule. Is that worse?

No, as long as you don't go over the 72 hours, then you are good. But you'll be effectively doing 6 transfers instead of 5. Make sense?

+1 If your fish arrive in the morning but you only want to do TTM at night, just do the first transfer the night before it's due to ensure 72 hours will not have elapsed.

Ok that's what my plan is (doing it the night before day 3). My big question is... is my 4th transfer on day 12 the last one or do I need another transfer after that one? Does my TTM need to be atleast 13 days? That's the number I'm missing (I bet it's in the OP but I just am not seeing it).

So long as 12 days have elapsed, then you are good to go:

1. Transfers need to occur every 72 hours OR less, NOT more
2. The total number of days to pass should be 12 OR more, NOT less
3. A minimum of four transfers is required, with more required if doing transfers more frequent than every 72 hours

Ok so 12 days must PASS so I'll have to do one more transfer any time between 12 hours and 72 hours after the 4th (the one on the 12th).
