Hey guys I am going to be undergoing a tank transfer in a week or so. I have an established 20 long that I will be moving to a 40B. Basically I’m wonder if the tank will go through a cycle if I use all my live rock and media from the 20. Ideally I’d get all new rock but I know I’ll have to wait for that to become live. So should I just transfer everything and then just add dry rock over time?
Thanks for any help

When I upgraded the tank that I have just now I used all the water and rock from my previous tank but what I did do was give the rock a dip in some of the old water from the old tank and a little clean at the same time ,what I didn't transfer was the sand from the previous system I just added new sand to the new tank and I have done this each time I have upgraded with no adverse affects but I also checked rock for any pest I.e aptasia things like that so it didn't go into the new tank hope this helps.

IME as long as you are not adding new rock, and maintaining all the old media, then there should be no cycle. I have seen ammonia when a significant (50% +) rock is added at the same time. My general rule is not to add anything new for 3 months, let everything stabilize, then start adding new rock slowly.

Are you refers to new dry or live rock?
