Hello all! My system seems to be coming along nicely. I have a GSP which is doing fine and beginning to spread out and multiply on its rock. It's up high with plenty of light and water flow, but I'll be adding another power head to keep the water moving a bit more. This was a freebie from a LFS and it was given to me basically as an indicator, but only after I told the owner I think my tank is getting closer and closer to be ready to stock. I don't want anyone thinking he's giving me livestock the day I bought my tank! I recently bought a handful of hermit crabs to help with a cyano issue and they're doing a pretty good job of keeping the issue at least at a standstill. I'll be doing a 25% water change tomorrow and hopefully the additional power head will help, but other than that salinity is good (I'm keeping it a bit low in these early stages because I'm hoping the added O2 will help the system establish itself) but unfortunately all my test tubes were dropped! I'll be picking some up soon but so far my water levels have fluctuated once and dropped down to an acceptable level and continue to hold there. So now for the questions!
My tank is roughly 130g. I don't have a protein skimmer but that will be my next big purchase and I'll be looking to buy in about 2 weeks. Anybody have any suggestions for me? I have a sump and I'd like the skimmer in there. Also, I plan on getting a calcium reactor for this tank. Is this something I should get soon, or can I wait a bit? Either way, suggestion on what type to get for this would be great as well.
Finally, I got a few snails today and they came with guests. I've done a little bit of research on common hitchhikers but I don't recognize these. First, I spotted a grey starfish a bit smaller than a pencil eraser on the shell of the biggest snail. Second, I saw some very small translucent "bugs". I say bugs because I'm really not sure what they are. They remind me of mites and stay on the snails. Are any of these guys harmful? Thanks for reading, can't wait to see what you guys have to say.
