Hi all,

I have a 20-gallon 1.5 years old super basic tank from petco with a few soft corals, 1 fish, and some invertebrates. Everything is going pretty well. I plan on upgrading to a 38-gallon AIO, which will pretty much be the largest tank I can find space for in my home. I don't plan on adding any new livestock soon and will just transfer the everything in the old tank to the new tank and add new salt water (I don't have any sand either).

The tank is scheduled to arrive in late September, but I have a 2.5-week vacation planned for early November. I'm currently contemplating whether to set up the tank and conduct the transfer immediately upon its arrival or to postpone the process until after I return from vacation. Is there a necessity for a "break-in" period for the new tank? Additionally, the new tank is rimless, and I have concerns about the potential for leaks being more likely. Consequently, I'm considering the idea that keeping a close eye on it every day for a few months might be a safer approach. Are these concerns valid, or should I not worry about them?

Thanks!

If you are transferring everything over wet, most importantly the rocks, then the new tank is insta-cycled, and its safe to move your fish over right away.

No need to be concerned about the fish, but seems you are concerned about the rimless tank, so for that reason maybe wait till after vacation. I think I would.

Tank arriving in Sept and vaca in November that should be plenty of time to work out details such ato, lighting etc. It should be an instant cycle since your transferring everything. Unless your adding gadgets that will need to be monitored and tweaked care should be similar to your current tank I would think. If your dosing and need to dial that stuff in I might be inclined to wait.

EDIT : I went back and reread your post. The following statement makes me change my mind and I think waiting would be better for you mentally so to speak since it sounds like it's what you think is best :thinking-face:

Consequently, I'm considering the idea that keeping a close eye on it every day for a few months might be a safer approach.
