Hey everyone! Yesterday my tank stand suffered damage that has it trashed at this point. I've got it shored up until I can get a replacement but am concerned with leaving it long term. I decided to pull the trigger and order a Red Sea Reefer 350 which will be a fun upgrade from my current 27 gallon cube I have. I plan to transfer all livestock and live rock over as soon as the new tank has stable temp and salinity. I'll also be moving over the marine pure media I have in the current tank as well to the new setup to hopefully reduce any chance of a cycle from happening. I also am using macro rock I was curious if others have done this type of upgrade and quick transfer before and what was your success?

i have done this several times myself and for others. it can work just fine as long as the beneficial bacteria in your rock doesn’t die while waiting to be placed in the new tank. however, that doesn’t mean you won’t see a “mini cycle” or get some type of algae. diatoms are usually the case when using new equipment (new tank or not).

I just went through a broken tank and move to a new tank. best thing I can say is to plan the move. Write it all down, double check it, etc. I was lucky and have other tanks and had a plan in place already in case anything ever happened, which it did. powerheads, heaters, storage containers for rock, etc. is all thats needed to keep the rock alive and the bac going. You can even use rubbermaid tubs to put the rocks in. I used brute cans, tubs, old tanks I had lying around for the snails and such, and all tanks had HOB filters, heaters and powerheads. Everything lived and is doing well.

You may still have a mini cycle of some sort, so just watch the new tank closely after the move. Mine was moved this past weekend and so far so good, but I am sure something will happen lol.

Either way, good luck and if ya need help or advise just ask.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies! I'm excited about the new tank just want to keep my fish and corals happy in the transition. I've had the majority of them for over a year now and they're doing excellent so I really want to keep it that way!

I'm happy for you getting the new system and sorry you had stand problems.

Your tank swap can go with ease. Many of us including have done what you are doing and it can be done with virtually no cycle.

Thank you! I'm excited too and plan to reuse the current tank. I have an 8 year old who is begging for her own reef tank so I think a new stand and maybe some upgrades will make it perfect for her.
