Today my son decided to throw a hot wheels car and it nailed my tank. Now I got a acrylic tank incase some thing like this were to happen. However there is a small chunk missing. Do I need to break the tank down or do u think I might be ok? Sorry for the crappy pics it’s the best I can do right now.

Ooh, no! That’s a bit worrisome. I’m not up on acrylic, so I’m no help. All I can think of is some type of crack refilling agent, but not totally sure. Someone with way more knowledge will be here to help out soon.

Sounds like the perfect excuse for a new tank. (bigger of course) Happy Holidays

So my plan is to take a piece of 3/8 acrylic cut it so that it is larger than the chip and cement it to the side of the tank. I can’t afford to tear this down and replace I gotta try to make this work. I will let everyone know once I make the repair.

You think it's going to break completely? Hard to see in the photo, but it doesn't look that bad to me. Does the 'crack' go all the way through the acrylic? If it's just a little surface divot, I'd think it'd be fine. How deep is the chip? (maybe stick a piece of clay or something in the chip to measure). How thick is the acrylic?

My advice may not be worth much here... I'm a glass guy. Acrylic experts want to jump in?

Hello
The chip in not very deep about 1/8”. I had the tank built to withstand a kid so the acrylic is 3/4”. I hope it won’t spider out it is not through only on the outside. I think the repair is probably more of a pice of mind than a must repair. I hope

I would wait on the repair, you might actually do more harm than good gluing a piece to it. It looks to me like a chip and you'll probably be fine. I would wait or PM one of the members I posted above for solid advice, all have worked with acrylic for YEARS and will give you the information you need. Acrylic glue works by "Melting" two acrylic pieces together via a chemical reaction, not something I would ever want to attempt on a full tank myself...

Oh I didn’t think about that...

Im no acrylic expert, but in aviation we do a lot of composite repairs.

Personally if it was me (based on advise from one of the experts previously noted) I would use some weld on acylic glue and a vacuum seal much like we use on composite and put the glue in the chip, then use the vacuum to get all the air bubbles out. The repair would most likely require some sanding and polishing after, which might be more work than its worth as acylic is tough to get back to perfect. If you go that route, Novus Plastic/ acrylic polish is a great product that we use on our helicopter window, I also use it on my plastics on motorcycle windows and car headlights.
