Tank Water vs. Tank Size

Hi,

I recently setup a 22 gallon long tank. After 20 lbs. of sand and about 13 lbs. rock, it took only 15 gallons wate to fill tank due to displacement.

For water treatments and supplements, xx amount per gallon, do you base on 15 gallons water or 22 gallon tank?

Just curious since previous setup, I went by tank size. Not sure if that is like over dosing especially adding calcium magnesium etc...

From what I’ve read and been doing it’s really about water volume. And BRS is doing/did an experiment with dosing elevated levels of calcium; etc. looks promising. I think corals grew/are growing better

Definitely go with actual water volume. For some reason tank manufacturers like to over state the tank volumes. A great example is the Marineland 300DD tank, it is more like 250g

Dose accurately for 15 gallons, wait a 1/2 hour and perform a test to see if you are in range per product instructions. Better than an overdose.

That is also a good rule for somebody that got so excited to wet a tank they never measured the gallons accurately. Start on the low side of your estimated gallons and dose the product. Let it mix & test. Write it all down & you can get water volume pretty close. 10% under is better than over.

Convention is to ‘size’ tanks based on external dimensions. No mystery there. More accurate measure of actual volume is based on internal dimensions.
