Do tanks look this dark when the lights off?
Or am I in need of a water change.

Depends on the water, ambient lighting, type of glass, etc. Best answer I can give you is maybe. When was the last time you performed a water change and what are your water parameters like?

Is the tank fully cycled? Do you know what your parameters are?

I wouldn't change water based solely on appearance. What you see here doesn't look awful. I've seen worse.

I will do a water change and clean the filter.
Do you know how much % of the water I can change (a maximum)?

the tank was someone for a year before I got it.
and I added MicroBacter7 to cycle the tank months ago.
I've added a slight amount of calcium. dKH Super Buffer to be specific.

I would like to know more about adding carbon and getting that water clean to keep my corals healthier.
Want to add an anemone for the clowns !

Can you answer about the water changes though? Like have you done any since owning the tank? The longer you’ve went without one will determine how much of a wc would be safe to do at once.

I've done 2-3 minor 10% water changes
30 gallon tank.
As long as the parameters are kept within range, you can go pretty big. Siphon the sandbed as you do the water change as it will physically remove the built up gunk giving a double whammy punch.

Activated carbon is readily available and is affordable. There’s many benefits to using activated carbon and I suggest almost every tank to run one.

I would definitely do a water change and add carbon as long as your parameters are the same as big of a wc as you want and for anemone I would wait until your parameters get locked down and you may need to add more lighting

tank with light on.
Corals shrunk after moving stuff around but have been recovering slowly.
will be doing a water change soon.

I have RODI water that I top off tank with.
Should I use that to make the salt water too?
I agree it is a good idea to wait till tank is stable to add more. Can’t wait for anemones to be put in!
might add larger moving corals in the summer(after anemones are in) if you have any ideas let me know!!

How often are you topping it off with RODI?

This is what the office tank looked like over 2 years ago with the lights on... Could be worse! =)

Algae bloom ^^^^

Yes, you want to use Ro/di water for mixing salt. I imagine the tank was neglected by the original owner and now you are dealing with it.
I would do multiple water changes, run carbon . More information on you setup would be helpful, water perimeters, do you have a sump and skimmer?

I top off with RODI water daily pre much.
Salt levels jump.
I use vibrant sea to mix.

Have no sump or skimmer just filter and flow.
Will doffentley do water changes.
What brand of carbon do you put into the tank so I know what to look for.

The best is ROX 0.8. Sold by bulk reef supply online. But the standard carbon that the LFS carries can also work for this purpose.

Great, also I leave my lights on for 11 hours.
Is this too long?
how long you keep them on
