Fish Tank Kings on Nat Geo Wild is much better than Tanked when it comes to showing more of the animal care, species selection and science/biology of aquarium keeping. Francis The Fish Geek seems very knowledgeable and cares about the fish.

I too watch the show for the entertainment value as well as the vague stocking info that still shows off possible fish one may not have looked into. Like Fyrfytr stated it has helped me to introduce my wife the the hobby and makes it easier to get the ok to spend the money on a hobby that can be very expensive and time consuming.
I only wish the would do a special on filtration and maybe one or two show on how to set up a reef tank. I know the have only done fish only tanks for the time frame they are working with but it would be cool to see a reef tank show edited for TV of course. If DIY channel can make a show on how build a house in 45 min I'm sure ATM could do a reef tank the right way with no cut corners.

They are a couple of hacks. I can not consider watching a show where the fish are certainly doomed as "entertainment." To each his own, I guess.

I did see and read the article that DSP had linked to this thread but are there articles out there on the mass deaths of the fish in their tanks (presumably due to the instant cycling that they do) or is everyone assuming there is a high death rate? I ask because I would like to read them.

I have talked to one of the maintnence companies that works with the show, and learned a lot about the behind the scenes. My big issue has always been technical info, which if you honestly look at our hobby, if you aren't a die hard reef junkie, most the stuff is incredibly boring. I put less thought into selecting my Skimmer than I did in deciding what socks I will wear today. I don't know what the par in my tank is, and I really don't care too much. As long as what i have is looking good is all that really matters to me.

I stopped watching with the Church tank.I could not believe the amount of money that was wasted on something like that. Forget feeding, housing, and medical care for the hundreds of people it could have provided, lets build a multi million dollar fish tank for our multi million dollar church, because that's the best thing to do with our congregation's money. I despise stuff like this, megachurches and the charlatans that lead them.
I have watched the show on Netflix and enjoyed Season 1.
While in Vegas for a convention my wife had to attend, I hoped on the bus down the strip and walked the 1.5 miles to the ATM warehouse. I met Redneck, The General and a few other guys but didn't get to meet Brett and Wade because they were filming an episode.
The quality of their work in person is spectacular and the level of detail is awesome.
They know their fish, chemicals, and what they're doing.
It's like someone else said, there is a lot of editing done to give it that "last minute put together" feel. These tanks are cycled, water is shipped in (no tap water used) etc. Unfortunately we don't get to see the "real reef keeping" part of the hobby but this is Hollywood (kinda) so they fake all kinds of stuff for ratings.
That's my $.02 check their place out sometime.

I don't really have any issues with the show...just kind of boring as far as I'm concerned...very little coral and not enough other info to peak my interest.

Sure glad those churches are tax exempt and can spend millions on a tish tank...
These guys are fish tank version of Jersey shore and don't care about anything besides the show (not even the customers or livestock). They are bringing negative attention to our hobby and I'm obviously not a fan. Everytime one of my friends ask me if I like that show I cringe.

+1 plus imho it only shows the commercial side not the hobby. I would have been nice if they went more into details on the setup process and have small "Did you know" or "How to" parts on the show.

When I started 15-20 years ago, the internet was pretty new and there weren't many forums around.
I did a lot of reading (actual books) which was amazing because I hate to read.
I remember reading Martin A. Moe's books and having a question about something.
I noticed that he lived in Plantation (where I lived), Looked him up in the white pages and called him.
Very nice man, he spent a lot of time with me on the phone answering my questions and advising me on the best way's to do things.
Anyway back to the show.
I have been editing TV shows and Commercials for about 20 years and can agree with Damon that the people behind the scenes do an excellent job of making the show entertaining.
Keep in mind for every hour of TV there is at least 5-6 hours of footage that is shot and cut out.

This has been a fabulous response to my thread - thank you!! I've been nodding or shaking my head at my monitor at work, which makes for an interesting scene. With all the misinformation out there about the show, Brett and Wade have mentioned that they're trying to address those concerns with the public. They've started the behind the scenes videos, some of which are very cool! They actually did review the filtration system for a couple of their larger systems and talked about how it took a couple months to get the under-the-floor piping laid to spec, etc. And they did a segment on how it took over a month of sketches and communication with a client before they even got the green light to proceed with a build.
In any case, to me, it's a great show. I'm still hoping that they'll do a one-time special for all of us enthusiasts that gives us a real feel for the timing it takes for them to truly complete a project.

honestly sticking a bunch of fish in a giant gumball machine with no sand no live rock no hiding places no live filtration....
the same goes for the jukebox

pretty much everything they make looks nice.
but fish are living creatures!
Yes they are beautiful but they are alive not just toys with pretty colors that move back and forth.
i really cant deal with it, it makes me sick that people with all the money in the world cant make a tank that will sustain its inhabitants not kill them in a week

I watch it when I can. My family all like to watch it also. As we all do enjoy the hobby. I have watched many episodes, and have wondered also like many here how they can just dump some very expensive fish and some delicate fish into the tank all in one day. The key I see is that they are building fish only tanks. They also use natural sea water and live sand base. They dont need to worry about curing live rock or nitrogen cycle or even ro water. They can do what they do and Im sure it works. Again in a fish only tank with incredible filtration natural sea water - and Im sure they do check all chemistry behind the scene this should work fine. I really enjoy the fish, as they do a great job of explaining many of the fish.
