Tanks based on Aquaforest Products:

Hey Jorge / Thanks for the heads up. It wasn't a typo.
On 11-28 had my water tested after a 2 wk WC at the lfs. They use Salifert tests. The results prior to starting AF products were:
Ca 380
Alk 12
Mg 1290
Po4 0.10
No3 15

Alk was too high so I took Ocean Blend part two offline.

Then on 12-03 using Red Sea Tests my results were:
Ca 450
Alk 10.5
Mg 1350
Po4 0.10
No3 15

Alk still too high but no AF dosing yet w/ 1+2+3

Tested again on 12-05 and after a 20% WC the results:
Ca 450
Alk 9.5
Mg 1350

My Alk is still too high but 1+2+3 went live yesterday on my tank.
I thought we needed to have the alk at 8 dkh w/ Af products. I want to bring it down slowly then maintain it at 8 dkh.
I am wrong?
Will dosing 25ml per day not increase my alk?

I would set all 3 of them to what you have your comp 2 at. Ifnits 5 ml then 5 ml. Make sure you test daily for alk, to ensure its dropping. Once its below 8 then start increasing slowly, making sure you always have it below 8 in NSW range. Specially if your running probiotic method, you tank will be ULNS in no time.

Based on the recommended 50ml per 100 ltrs daily that would extrapolate out to 400ml per component per day?

At 50USD for 5000ml of each component thats like 160USD a month to dose?

How do people with large tanks afford that? lol

The upfront cost of buying all the separate components is a little more than purchasing the premixed jugs the first go around but in the long run you'll save a lot.

I purchased the 1000g calcium and used 250g for one batch or 5 liters... so I should have enough for another 15 liters.

I purchased the 750g magnesium and use 50g per batch or 5 liters so that leaves enough for another 14 batches.

Component A strong you use 25ml out of a 75ml bottle

Component B strong you use 25ml out of a 75ml bottle.

So you have enough left over in those for another 10 liters or 2 more batches.

This is just one example.... if you do the math you'll see you'll save a tremendous amount. [emoji4]


After mixing these ingredients into your 5 liter jug then top it off to 5000ml with RODI water and your set. [emoji4]

Well, they make the same decision everyone before them made, they decide to switch to an AF DIY setup, or they use a CaRx. Having said that, if these numbers you are quoting are from the AF literature then that is based on a full mature SPS system. If you are currently only using 50ml then the recommendation is you start out with that or even try a little less.

So whenever you have a high, a low seems to set in when it comes to this hobby. Started to loose some corals for no particular reason, so i started to do some research and found my heater might have been bad so i tosses it. 80 % of the corals look amazing, 15 % are doing ok ( color loss after bulb change) however growth is there. Lastly 5 % dead or dying. Thinking tank could be starving even though i feed like an animal, and i have reduced nppro and provios to 1 drop per day. Seems to be a particular species that does bad in the tank, mostly millis. Cant seem to be able to keep them happy. Kinda debating what to do, if i should cut dosing once again to half so pro and bios EoD or stop all together for the time being. Here are some shots and parameters
Alk 7.3-7.7 salifert
Calcim 390 salifert
Mag 1300 salifert
No3 2ppm salifert ( barely)
Po4 0 ( api) ran out of hanna reagents.
SG 1.025
K testing today new kit
Temp 79F steady.
Lights 3 b+ 3 c+ bulb are 1 week old.
Normal photo is 8 hrs, down to 5 hrs raising 1 hr per week till 8.

Other corals are my Red planet that simce i got it i just cant stop it from necrosis . Its down to a stub, i have dipped , dipped, you name it. Also a wt Tierra del fuego i just got . Lastly this cap. I have checked for pest and nothing.

I'd like to focus on one of the first things you said about suspecting a faulty heater... what happened??

I find in most cases unless something absolutely catastrophic takes place , it can be many small things that lead up to things going bad.
