Found a series of salt mix tests on another forum and the AF reef salt was 1500+ from both home test kits and triton. AF Probiotic was significantly less Mg.

Still not entirely clear what the dangers (if any) of elevated Mg.

I am just wondering although few people are reporting about high magnesium level with Reef salt but many of us never actually faced it. Although 1500ppm Mg is not lethal or will not blow the system but I think the major concern is that its not matching with the batch analysis report coming with the salt.

First off after a week of frustration for you this week, and earlier questions I am posting this post so that you are vindicated in your questioning AF’s salt mix Mg.

In fact, after stumbling across information pointed out in this link all salt mixes have inconsistency that we are aware of from box to box now from the test results. In the link you will find test results in post 144 and there on, of most all the salt mixes on the market right now. You will also see that Aquaforest salt mixed tested high in Mg with an average of 1550 ppm. You will also see that Ca, Alk, and salinity fluctuate from box to box with all brand also.

I want to thank you for making myself and a couple of others do the research and find an answer to your question about Aquaforest salt mix testing inconsistencies from the label. I have noticed inconsistency’s and have made adjustment and will continue to test and make adjustment. Does this change my mind about Aquaforest products? No. I have had some of the best results with this line of product that I have had in my time in reefing. But now knowing, I can better know that I will have to adjust.

I will point out one other thing as a suggestion, always test even when you have things dialed because our systems are constantly changing regardless of salt mixes or dosing mixes. Test, test, test, but also do not drive yourself to achieve the perfect parameters or reefing will become not fun anymore.

Now that I'm nearing the end of my 1st box of AF Reef salt I'm curious if a new box will have the same high Mg, presumably being from a different batch. Granted I have exactly 0 livestock to worry about at this point so switching to another brand isn't going to impact me nearly as much as others but I do now have questions about quality control going forward; especially since the included sheet with batch parameters weren't even close to the results of testing (for Mg) seen in the salt mix thread.

As is stated I have notices some slight variances, but nothing that would make me change. I have used other salts, but like the results with AF reef salt over the others.

Thank you. I agree with you on af products. I do plan to continue using. So far is been a blast and so far my coral are happier more than ever! I just don't like to find levels way out of what the supplier says they are....but I do understand it varies box to box

Did my first water change with Aquaforest Reef Salt this weekend! I took some before pics to try and gauge changes.

50 gal total water * 10% weekly water changes = 25 weeks until on 100% Aquaforest salt. That will take a while!

I have been using the aquaforest system for one week. Although I did a 15 gallon water change Friday and 5 gallons a day from Monday to today. My alk, cal,mag have all stayed very consistent so I'm happy. Even better my sps are starting to change brighter colors, more polyps extended all day vs a few hours. I'm super hapy

Just mixed up 5gal from a new box of Af Reef Salt with a different lot # and manufactured 11/2016, 4 months after previous box with high Mag issues.

Again, the numbers on the printed sheet included in the box aren't even in the same ball park as what I'm testing. Mag is still >1500. Cal is right at 500, and Alk 8.5.. All with a salinity right at 1.026 which is slightly higher than what the data sheet was measured at so I'd expect a little higher than stated in the box but certainly not off the charts.

I have some IO salt I'll mix up later to double check the test kits (Calcium- Red Sea, Alk-Hanna, Mg-Salifert) and then contact AF customer service.
