Hi, a very basic question but I am new and want to do correctly for health of my new reefer friends.

I use to use tap water in my fresh water aquarium and then add gunk to get it correct.

I understand that I need to use an iodiser or RO DI unit to prep the water first? So what are some good brands to use and more importantly how or where do you prepare the water?

Is this done in the tank near the sump (I don't think so)? or is this set up outside somewhere, how many litres do you need to get 1L of good water etc?

May seem a simple question, but google hasn't been giving me great answers.

TY Mark

There are a ton of different models that would work just as well as another unfortunately. I use a 4 stage system from BulkReefSupply. The water is made outside the tank, where the RO/DI unit has access to a water line and a drain. You normally make the water and store it, to be used when needed (whether it is to be mixed with salt or used as top off). How much waste water you produce depends on the unit but the typical ration is 4:1 (waste to filtered water).

Gonna need to know a few things: How many gallons/liters is your tank? How frequent are you going to do water changes? Do you have a LFS?

Starting off I went to my LFS to get pre mixed saltwater (Mixed with RO) and some extra RO water for top off.

I purchased a RO unit and make my water now and it's much better! This takes place away from your tank. I have a 20 gallon tank so I want a setup to do 3-5 gallon changes depending on my circumstances. I have a 10 gallon mixing brute can and a 5 gallon bucket to move old water into so I can pour it out. I sit my RO unit in the guest bathtub and run the water from the sink using an adapter into the RO unit and it filters it into my 2 water jugs that I have (1 for top off and 1 for saltwater). I fill up the jugs (5 gallon) all at once once a week to make it easy so I have plenty of water throughout the week and makes my water changes super quick and easy.

There are many different setups, some are super elaborate that can be found on this site. Mine works for me but there is really no correct way to do it other than having a unit and a TDS (to test the ppm, ideal is 000) meter and making sure you have clean water.

"Drinks like a fish" Well, what kind? Freshwater fish dont drink, marine fish do. Corals and inverts too.
WHere I live the tap water actually kills the fish as well because of the cloramines.

I picked up this one used cheap and purchased new filters http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-6-stage-universal-plus-ro-di-system-75gpd.html
I dont have anywhere to hook it up full time so I keep it in a container and make water monthly in my kitchen. 90 min per 5 gal. its very easy.

Hi Wrassy, 350 litre tank, I am unsure about premade water in Auckland NZ as there appears to be far more great looking Marine supply stores, not many over here. Thanks for the methodology I will use this. Quite a bit of the equipment mentioned on here looks great but don't over here so may get off Ebay. I am going to get a Reefer 350. TYY
