My target mandarin recently developed a large cyst-like bump on its head. It looks like a big pimple with a nipple, for lack of a better term. I did some googling and found a handful of other similar cases over the years, but very rare and no good explanations. Any insight is appreciated. As of now I'm operating under the assumption that thing might pop eventually and leave an open wound/hole.

Cysts can contain thousands of parasitic spores. Best to isolate the fish until the cyst is either absorbed by the fish's body or releases into the water. A wide spectrum antibiotic like kanaplex or Furan2 can treat most infections until the fish's immune system heals any possible wound.

Worth noting last livestock added was just snails on Jan 25th: nassarius, tongan nassarius, cerith, trochus. Prior to that, the last fish added was over 6 months ago. Clowns, firefish, chromis, and banghai cardinal all look fine.

If this is a virus, I'm not sure where it came from or why the mandarin would be affected before the others. I was hoping maybe he got stung by my bta or something .

Would it be a crazy idea to try and drain this thing myself with a hypodermic needle and syringe? My thought would be the hole from the needle would be a lot smaller wound than if this thing pops open naturally. It would also minimize the release of spores etc...

Some have done this exact process. Some had good results; some had poor/sad results.

Got home today and it has shrunken down quite a bit. It doesnt look like it popped though. Having trouble catching him anyway so I'll see how it looks after lights out tonight and fish him out when he is sleeping if need be. Thanks for all the replies!

Looked this morning a couldn't even see a mark anymore. Hopefully it just shrank down and didnt eject unto the tank.

Sometimes, we need to nothing at all.
Happy for your success.
Lately, I have not been taking immediate action on anything, so far, all my fears have resolved themselves.

Glad to hear everything is okay. I have a spotted mandarin as well and was really pulling for yours to pull through :)
