I have a sick naso tang. It won't eat and now has fin rot. Or so it appears to be fin rot. Can I use tea tree oil to treat? And is it reefsafe? Yes I know qt. Is the best idea.

Medications based on tea tree oil are sometimes promoted as cures for finrot. While they may work in some instances, they do not work reliably and are best considered preventatives rather than cures for finrot. As such, they should be used when a fish appears to be physically damaged to prevent finrot infections from getting started. Should the fish develop the infection, the tea tree oil will need to be supplemented with an appropriate antibiotic or antibacterial medication. It's promoted as an anti-fungal so I would caution against adding it to your reef.

@Humblefish @3FordFamily might give you better treatment options...

I think you would be better off treating (in a QT) with any of these Melafix, Furanase, Furan-2, Maracyn, Maracyn-Two and Maracyn Plus.

This isn't something I've personally come across hopefully trusty humble will be far more useful (as usual) than I!

^^This. Although I would suggest Kanaplex and/or Furan-2. For the widest possible spectrum you can treat with Kanaplex, Furan-2 and Metroplex (or Metro-MS) concurrently. But only use these medications in a QT.

I know some have had success treating with Melafix and/or Pimafix, and these are supposedly "reef safe" herbal remedies. I believe one, if not both of them, contains tea tree oil. I personally have had no success using these products, but in the future I plan on experimenting with them again.

I wish he wouald eat. But he wont! Use to be a nori pig. Then just quit. Tried live macros, mysis, and nori.

How long have you had him? Bacterial infections, such as fin rot, are often secondary to preexisting parasitic infestations like ich, velvet, etc. For fish with ich - it's often complications from the secondary bacterial infection which actually kills the fish. :(

Have you tried soaking food in garlic to entice him to eat?

About 2 months. He had ick from when I added him to the tank. But he shook it off.

I think it's back now. You just aren't seeing it because it's harboring inside the gills. Is he breathing heavy?

If you QT, he will need to be treated with both copper & antibiotics. And unfortunately, all of your fish will need to be treated with copper, and the DT will have to be left fallow (fishless) for 72 days if you wish to eradicate ich in there.
