Hello fellow reefers! I am looking to fund a reef tank for my classroom and I have found 1 grant that will allow me $125 in order to do so. I have yet to talk to my LFS yet about options but I was curious if you guys thought this might even be possible… I’d probably do a hob with a 20 long tank. Figured i could find deals on most things. Maybe I’d get lucky and get a hob skimmer or something else from someone local. Anyways.. any thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated.
I have a 5 year old 75 gallon tank with a sump so this will be a little different experience. Also, the wife does not want me spending my own money on it.

This guy did a series on a budget-build reef tank that inspired me to get started for cheap. It's possible, but not easy. You'll likely need either some help from members of the local reefing community, or another grant. Love the idea though, this hobby is so valuable and students will certainly benefit from having a reef in the classroom! Good luck with this, reach out to some local hobbyists to see if they can contribute materials that are gathering dust.

I agree, look to the local reefing community/clubs. I was the kid in school who actually brought fish into the classroom for a couple of FW tanks.

Thanks! Definitely will do that!

Is there a way you can bring some legitimacy to your request? You have come to what is generally a pretty trusting community with very giving people, but these 'classroom projects' have a tendency of having donations show up on craigslist or facebook market place. I was on one forum whereas someone asked for donations for their college project just to find out about a year later it has turned into a commercial endeavor all started on the back of 'its for the children' requests. Sorry to be a curmudgeon, but the amount of scams running all over the place make it really hard to give trust to some random request on the internet.

edit: Sorry if that sounded attacking. Not meant to be. Really asking is there a way that a random person could validate the authenticity of the request.

Yeah no that’s a completely reasonable ask. I actually got the idea from a fellow teacher who gave me a 55 gallon tank. I was super eager to do it but then the logistics put a halt after thinking about funding it. To be honest I’m not sure what would even qualify as reasonable. I could provide proof using my work ID as well as maybe make a build thread dedicated to it. For people who donate I could have video I guess demonstrating exactly the use for it? I am typically a pretty trusting person myself and didn’t think about this. But I definitely should come up with a way to demonstrate this is legit. Thank you!

I should also probably add that I do not have any intention of asking for donations from this group. More from lfs and the people from the my local reefing community. It helps that I’m already established in a lot of those groups and have been for some time.

Agree, this guy is a pro in such questions. That's a great idea to place a reef tank in your classroom, but you must be ready to take care of it and teach others to do some stuff. I think your teacher might help you.

As a teacher who understands the importance of budgeting, I totally get your excitement about scoring deals and finding local resources. It sounds like you've got a solid plan in mind for the setup.Speaking of teaching, it's a field close to my heart, and I've often thought about the struggles educators face with inadequate pay. It's crucial to address this issue and support teachers better. If you're open to exploring exciting teaching opportunities, Teach in London could be right up your alley. Very cool and thank you for reaching out! I am very happy with where I am though. Good luck with your search though! It’s always tough to find quality teachers.

Hey, just checking on if you gave this a go or not. I'm pretty much in the same exact boat, as I just started my own saltwater tank (no corals yet as I still don't have everything I'd need for that). Would love to hear if you got it up and running!
