Teflon tape dissolves in salt water - Fact or fiction

I was told that Teflon tape will dissolve in salt water. Fact or fiction?

I'm going to say fiction but I am not 100% sure on that. I am basing this guess on all of the water softener installations out there that use it on the threaded connections. Would those not fail too?

Fiction. Teflon is PTFE. Stable in saltwater.

Fiction. I had some on my return plumbing for 8 years and it was still intact when I broke the tank down
