Telepathic powers, extremely good vision or some other senses?

In short, I have 2 female filefish and a couple of days ago one of them began defending and cleaning a territory.

This coincided with me bringing a male filefish home. The thing is, he's not in the tank, he's in quarantine in a fuzzy plastic box 20 feet away.

It's a strange behavior to start with (breeding behavior by herself) and I wonder if the male presence in the house is the cause and in that case, how is she aware of his presence.

Thanks! Yes, it's my tank, I shot it with a Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera. This camera really does blackmagic when capturing reef tanks, especially when there's daylight behind.


It would be too much of a coincidence that she would be displaying breeding behaviors (by herself), right at the same time the male arrived.

It is fascinating behavior. I'd love to put it to test under a lab setting. There is also expectation bias, so getting a clear baseline would be important to determine if there is a significant behavioral change. I'll be interested to hear how she accepts the male once he goes in.

She's not defending that rock anymore. There's still over a week of quarentine, so there's still some time to watch what will happen.

The Blackmagic pocket 4K puts out really washed out images, but they have 12 bits of color depth and this allows you to go really heavy on the color correction, to get the image back to something close to what you see and achieve a more cinematic look.

No autofocus or things like that, though.
