Hi. I am about to reinstall my DIY sump for my 65 tank. I currently have a 300w heater plugged into an ink bird temp controller. I have ordered another 400 w heater and plan to run both (one as a backup) and plug both into the ink bird. Both heaters will live in the sump but where do y’all suggest the probe to live in the sump with the heaters or in the DT ??

I’ve always had mine in the sump, usually near the overflow (incoming water). Should have the primary probe in the same location as the heater(s). Some folks run two, one in the sump and one in the DT. But honestly, one in the sump is perfectly fine.

Yes, close to heaters.
If you put the probe in the dt, the heaters will stay on when you stop pumps for feeding

Unless you have woefully low flow between the display and the sump, there will be a very small delta between the two. Much better to put the probe in the sump upstream of the heating elements if you can.

I actually measure temp in both .... its the same.

Ok. Thanks great points. I didn’t think about pump stops and feedings. That’s why I ask. Thanks again.

I just measured my 300g display and my 100g sump. Both the exact same down to the 10th of a degree. My return pump is about 700gph.

I have my heaters in the first chamber of my sump, the temp probe in the middle.

I have my probe in the inlet of my sump by my filter socks and my heater is in the return pump chamber at the other end of the sump. I usually measure temp in both the display and sump and generally don't have much of a difference if any between the two.
