Was bored and had an empty 20 gallon aquarium and 15 pounds of dry rock [emoji23].

Because i have no idea what i am doing with this I currently have outside.

Put a 1200 gph powerhead in and stuck under an awning with an ato to deal with evaporation.

Is there a maximum temperature to cycle a tank? Does increased temperature have an effect positive or negative on the nitrogen cycle? Ill admit i looked none of this up, there are no fish or live stock.

Just made me wonder on some things.

There is a top of the "bell curve" at which the bio critters multiply the most easily. Any higher or lower and their growth slows and eventually stops. Would be a good idea to encourage the bio critters that live at the same temp as your fish, inverts and corals will be living.

Maybe ill throw a temp monitor in there to gauge how much varies. Tbh i am not sure what if anything is going in here. Was simply thinking id cycle the rock so was ready if i did need.

it will cycle just by being outside even if it was winter. agree it slows greatly, but just by being wetxoutdoors you are as good as cycled especially this time of year (or cold koi ponds would die, they still excrete ammonia but it all slows agreed heavily)

predicted time it will pass a half ppm oxidation test in current conditions: within 2 mos. check let us know!

this is kind of a rare test for us in cycling threads, its an unassisted cycle. water, time, dry rocks, nature's addition and feed and bacteria vectoring this is perfect.

we've debated these dynamics before, now G gets to test it. I would enjoy heartily seeing a small ammonia oxidation test, about .5 ppm worth, at day 60 so very much. if you would do that I would link it to some good threads on the matter.

the perfect test arrangement:

take ammonia reading before the addition of liquid ammonia on day 30 so we can see the baseline zero reading for that kit.

dose using liquid ammonia to the first increment of change that tester will register, above that zero setpoint. the lowest degree of change your kit registers, stop there take a pic.

24 hours retest, fingers crossed its back to calibrated zero. if it passes bac is confirmed, if it doesn't I go live on a mountain in the Himalayas for a while contemplate life/universe etc

Will do

hey also, you are keeping it saltwater/topped up to normal levels as it sits there pretty much right?

that w add an extra dimension of challenge since you w be relying on nature / terrestrial land and air currents vectoring to hopefully bring in marine species. Id like to get a month extension lol but already typed 2 mos for saltwater, still think it has a chance :) just thought of that little detail though. cant wait

Yes pretty much just sitting there [emoji23]

I live on a lagoon. Air currents do not have to travel very far in my case, so might not be as interesting of a case study as if i lived in Nebraska:

I pictured you in the cotton plains mid us
that would be me projecting outward my current location onto others.
ok 60 days gtg ha yay how fun

It would be better if some genius didnt plant Japanese knotweed 50 years ago.

How i start aquarium and pond plants from seeds.

1). Fill a seed starting tray with water.
2). Buy a bag of cheap top soil, the 1-2$ cheap. Nothing can float in it.
3). Add a layer of soil
to a net cup and compress, add the seeds, then another layer of soil.

When the seedlings emerge add fertilizer osimacote is fine. About 1 tablespoon per tray.
