I live in hot Florida.

I don‘t use any heaters in my tank because, if anything, I struggle to keep the tank from overheating.

Today the tank is about 73F. I added a heater, and it did nothing. I added another one, and I’m waiting for it to come up.

I’m not looking for advice; I want to know if anyone else got a sudden temperature drop.

It's frigid out here; it’s currently 50F! It usually doesn’t get cold until February, so this was a shock!

Probably no issue, I would always keep heaters in the tank no? If not needed they will just stay off

Yes my tank dropped significantly last night. It dropped almost 10 degrees from 78 to 69! I didn’t have the heater plugged in cuz 8 mean it’s relatively warm here like you said here in FL but now I know. I put in 2 heaters and the tank is sitting at 74 so not as warm but not as cold either.

I live in PA so I do have heaters but we did not have AC until just a few years ago. Anyway I had an old chiller for the tank that used a controller to regulate. Anyhow the controller malfunctioned and stuck on in the middle of the night. My husband noticed condensation on the tank when he was heading to the bathroom. He told me and the tank was down to 49°F!

I figured everything was toast and the fish were swirling lifelessly on the sandbed. I slowly heated the tank back up and amazingly everything recovered except 2 chromis and a damsel. The firefish, hand raised tomato clownfish and one other fish (but can't recall what it was ) survived along with all the coral and a blue Crocea clam. I never dreamed that they could survive that.

My tank is 73F despite the 2 heaters.

I feel good that I’m not the only one! :)

I also live in Florida, I am currently out of town (on vacation ! :) ) and I asked a friend to connect the heater, not sure if that is working or if the winter storm is really out of scale.

Ouch, you gotta keep a heater to keep temps up close to natural running temps with lights and everything on, that's why one of my tanks runs close to 80° is because normal highest running temp is 80° ....I wouldn't run a tank el natural with temperature...

I will now! :)

I use heaters in my tanks because we keep our house cool, but my tank temp has dropped to 68 over the course of an afternoon-evening, and was raised back up to 78 the next morning-afternoon with no bad outcomes other than some stress on me. :) Good luck!

Indiana here and we just suffered -10F with -40F wind chills - my 'swiss cheese-like' house - allowed my tank room temp to dip to 59F and the tank was struggling (200g total) to maintain 78F setpoint with 600w of heat. I got worried at 76F! I added an extra 200w I had around and saved a bigger dip. Glad to hear some stories of bigger dips than I experienced! Good luck to you in Florida! I lived there for a few years - fishless...lol.

At 48 degrees by you (brr) and no heater, I would not expect less than a drop in temp.
I have a friend in kendall that says today is the first time in 35 years he has used his furnace

I live in Central Valley, CA, but it can get cold in winter here. Few years ago, when I was on skiing vacations, my two heaters couldn't cope with temp drop and I had to remotely increase house thermostat temp. Since then I bought an extra heater.

I run heaters for sure, my ac will cause temp fluctuation at night when the lights are off.

Edit: Pertaining story as I wait for dinner:

I use the hydros with a ranco heater controller to keep my temperature in a .4° swing. The graphs are laughable, haha, but I just noticed my temperature dips and the log times staying on a little longer like 10-20 min longer than usual, which it's usually on for 5-10min and i noticed i was getting like 15-25 min run times for my heaters and Sure enough I felt one of the 3 heaters and one was out, so that's cool :)

Merry Christmas / happy end of year everyone!!
