hey guys. So I’ve never really had a probably keeping my tank at 78. It was always stable. Fast forward to now. Was battling Dino’s for a minute and was recommended to get a uv sterilizer.

So I got a 55watt one and now during the day my temp hits 80. Dino’s are GONE though. At this point I’ve turned off my heaters but I experience a fluctuation of temp of about 4 degree between night and day.

Is this a problem. Things are starting to recover from the Dino’s. I lost a acro during it and my chalice has a couple white spots on it from them. They were bad like really bad make me shiver thinking about it

Oh almost forgot I have a 40gal DT with a 29 sump.

I can safely say I had the EXACT same thing happen. 78 Dey and never moved until I started running my UV.

I now have my heaters set at 80 and keep my tank there.

I was fluctuating as well and chose stability

55w is way overkill for a 40.. You don’t really need to run UV full time, I just run mine when I have issues that need addressing.

Agreed on overkill, but I’ll bet it kills things for sure!

Agree to run as needed but would still set heaters at 80 to avoid fluctuations

Lol yes I know it’s overkill but had two reasons for this one wanted to make sure it was gonna do the job and two because I am eventually moving bigger 75 or 90. From what I have read 55watters are rated for a couple thousand gallon ponds. So I figured it would do the job.

So 80 isn’t going to limit me to specific corals or anything is it?

There are a few fish I know of that prefer cooler temps, low 70’s, but then you need everything to like those cool temps.

80 deg. Is a very typical and acceptable temp for a reef tank

right on! Appreciate the quick responses from everyone! One quick off topic question. The chalice that was affected my the Dino’s has some tissue recession. Will it come back? Anything I can do to help it?

I don’t have any chalices ( but I will soon!)

I think your best bet is to start a new thread in the coral forum as those experts tend to hang out there.

Yeah 80 degrees is fine. What you want to prevent is temperature swings of no more then 2 degrees per day. Keeping temperature stable is the key.
