digital stick to glass reading between 98.5-99.7 across the day. Reads outside at 75 even as I keep ac at 68.(I like needing a hoodie). This is towards the top next to a return power head.

I added another with a probe. Same side but at the front of the tank bottom. This stays steady around 81 degrees.

How should I interpret this and is there a better method for judging controlling? Considering the JBJ monitor/ controller

Thanks

As not reliable
Considering the JBJ monitor/ controller
Temp controllers with heaters and a controller with a probe are the better choices. JBJ is a good choice
Thanks
Also for spot checking you can use one of the cooking digital ones for like meat on the grill. Be sure it goes down to around freezing.

I’m trying to understand and make sure I’m adjusting to the right reading. This is the closest they usually are( at night although air runs all day).

I’m assuming this will change again once I remove the hood when the new light arrives. I just want to make sure I am reacting to the right temp?? Everything says 78. I hover 78-81

I have that exact same stick on thermometer on each of two sumps. Although it's got a little metal tab that contacts the glass and supposedly makes it more accurate, they are nonetheless consistently about 2 degrees F lower than the actual tank temp. I generally only glance at them when doing maintenance, as a backup to confirm that my temp probes are working properly. I calibrate my temp probes against a precision stick thermometer designed for the aquarium temperature range.

Your in-water probe is likely more accurate. That's a pretty warm tank; some livestock may start to suffer at higher than 82 degrees. Is that temperature from a heater, or ambient temp + hood + pumps + lights? If the latter and you'd like to bring it down a bit, you could get a controller, and a fan to direct air over the water surface, and you should be able to bring that temp down 2 degrees or so pretty easily, without having to resort to the hassle, expense, and noise of a chiller. However you will see more evaporation when using a cooling fan.

Only a heater and light. I would adjust now. But. Hood off and AI prime light this week. So totally open top. Maybe will adjust.

If No change and even if change. Should I adjust off probe in the water bottom of tank far side/ stick on outside of tank top of return?

Or other proffered ? Idc price. I want to be precise on what my temp is.

Also- I have some level of light 15hrs a day. Is this an issue if the latter ends are mostly blues no whites ? (I was instructed this timeframe from lfs). I’ll have timed feeders this week also so hours I need it on vs what it needs will shift
