Hi Guys

Which test kit would you recommend?

-Kamla

what type of tank?
if its fish only then ammonia and nitrates
if its reef tank then nitrates, phos, cal, alk and mag.
Red sea, Salifert and Hanna checker make good test kits.

I prefer the following for my acro reef tank:

Hanna - ULR Phosphorous (Phosphate)
Salifert - Alk, Mag, Cal
Red Sea - Ammonia, Nitrite, Iodine, pH
Nyos - Nitrate

But as stated above, what you test for depends on what you have in your tank.

i plan on a small reef :)

i also have a new freshwater API test kit sitting around, could use ammonia and nitrates tests from that kit?

API test kits are simple to use. But the trade off is the accuracy of results. Red Sea kits are a much more professional kit offering better accuracy. The trade off is that they can be a bit more complicated to use.

I use both; API to do routine testing and the Red Sea to back up any API test results that raise a concern.

Have used Red Sea, Salifert and Hanna. Based on professional water analysis I have found that Red Sea and Salifert tend to read high. The only kits that were dead on with analysis were Hanna.

newbie quesiton- but if i'm running fish only, i only need the API saltwater (ammonia, ph, nitrite, nitrate)? only if I deciede to add some coral will i need the other stuff (po4, calcium, etc?)

Try them out to discover which ones you prefer. For me I love Salifert for NO3 and Hanna for Alk & PO4. Wasn't crazy about Red Sea and I find API cheap and messy to use while not very precise but they were great to get my feet wet in testing.

Nitrate - Red Sea Pro
Phosphate - Hanna ULR
Alkalinity - Hanna, Red Sea Pro or Salifert
Calcium - Red Sea Pro
Magnesium - Salifert
