Ok so I was at the pet store and decided to pick up a test kit. I was reading on here to get the API reef master test kit but after looking at that and the saltwater master test kit I noticed that the reef master didn't have the little nitrite test bottle in it. It had the 2 nitrate test bottles in it. So question in should I get the saltwater master or the reef master? I want to try to have a mixed tank but right now I'm starting with fish only.

What tests are in both? The nitrate test does have two bottles. Let me know the difference between the two and maybe I can help.

You need both kits to test properly.
Reef Master kit Includes all dkh, calcium, phosphate, nitrate,
Saltwater master kit includes high range pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate

Though i would stay away from api and head striaght towards salifert.

I started with API and have been converting to Red Sea for ca and mg. I test ph with a digital monitor. I'll buy Red Sea for nitrate and phosphate when I run out. I have the Red Sea alk test but find the API kh test easier to read so I use that. For what it's worth, I had a fowlr tank for three years using only API testing and it did fine. They might not be as accurate, but they did measure consistency from week to week. Just my 0.02.

If your starting with F/O then id go with the one that comes with

Nitrate
Nitrite
Ammonia
PH

And API makes the PO4 Tests and Alk. Tests may need them as well.
Thats really all you should need for F/O but once you start tossing in Coral you'll need a few more.

This is exactly how I started.

Ok thanks for all the useful input guys. Ill start with the API for now the only reason I picked it up is because my son works for petsmart and gets a good deal on supplys. Ill look into the other test mentioned when I sart to add coral. Again thanks everyone for you input.
