How long has it been at 1600? It can take up to 2wks before seeing any results.

Over a month. I'm not sure if this test kit is accurate. A guy I had been getting corals from, told me to raise my mag when I checked it it was already there. And has read that since.

it's not any mag..you have to use kent tech m. if you google a bit more, you'll find a ton of threads on it's use.
also..that red sea test kit works great, i use it and have double checked w/ other kits. the key is my above sentence.

Reef Foundation kit is made by Red Sea and is one of the best out there.
Well if you haven't dosed magnesium and its at 1600, then somethings amiss.

What salt are you using? What do you have in terms of corals in your tank, sps? I think that it is conceivable that your Mag is elevated from water changes alone if you don't have any/a lot of corals that are sucking up the elements. I had elevated Mag w/o dosing from just weekly water changes from using RC. Just a thought.
But remember..if you want to rid of bryopsis by elevating mag, it's not just elevating mag w/ any buffer, it's using a specific one, kent tech m. Apparently, there's something else in there that does the trick. There's plenty of information on the web about this.

I do use Reef Crystal. I have a mix of corals. I have 2 kinds of frogspawn, candy cane, 3 different zoas, 2 different monti , acan, clam, favia, a toadstool leather, and a blastos. I think that's all. I have a 50 gallon breeder tank. I used to do monthly water changes switched to weekly. Now I'm back to monthly 20%. I only have 2 percula clowns a bangaii cardinal diamond goby, lawnmower blenny.

Red sea mag kit can be tricky... I was testing at well above 1600 untill I realized I missed a(hidden) step. Are you adding 5 drops of the first reagent and swirling the solution between the drops? It's easy to only add one drop as the 5x symbol is not in line(its above) with the directions on the card. I myself have made this mistake a couple of times... Fool me once shame on red sea, fool me twice and I'm an idiot

Assuming you've double checked your test kit w/ another, your Mag may be high just from maintenance. Mine never got as high as yours but it was definitely above the normal range. I never worried about as it eventually lowered itself.
I do agree that the red sea mag test is arduous.
I have been playing around with different test kits for the last year after I found some saliferts to be off from each other. 3 separate test kits and they were off from each other. I have had this issue before with them. So I am done with Salifert. One came with a test sample and I could not even get a close reading with the test sample.
I am now using Red sea and and Hana photometer for Calcium and alk.. I test with the hanna and double check with red sea.. I have tried the Elos test kits and dont feel they can be very accurate but are good for more like a quick check.. Counting drips instead of using a syringe no way can it be accurate..
