So I’ve had an API test kit for going on prob 9-10 months now and about to run out.. the only problem i have with the API kit is my ammonia readings are never truly accurate. I did my weekly testing today and after a water change 2 days ago it’s reading 2.0 PPM... I’m thinking to myself there is no way on gods green earth... so i tested it again... 0PPM. So once again i test it and same thing 0PPM.. just curious to see what everyone uses to test ammonia.

I have not tested for ammonia since my tank cycle ended if you have an established tank I don’t see the need unless there was an issue.

I use Red Sea test kits for everything. If there's ever a doubt about accuracy of any test kit, can always test pre-mixed salt water.

Had the kit from previous tanks but The Tank is only about 2 1/2 - 3 months old.. so I’m still testing to make everything stays stable.. when i get around the 6 month mark or so and it stables out for sure is when I’ll prob start cutting back

Trust me I’ve been there. not putting the blame on you but sometimes I notice when I did test back then it was human error. for an example when I test my tank salinity I don’t check it once I check it three times.

Keep in mind the slightest error I can throw a test kit off. I hope that helps.

I’m sure human error has played a role in it sometimes atleast.. it’s to the point it happens so often tho

API test kits are notorious for detecting ammonia when it’s not present. I would rather go with Red Sea, Hanna, or Salifert.

Also in the boat of not testing ammonia since the first 4-5 weeks of the tank operating. Was using all API test kits but started dosing my tank daily and needed to upgrade to Red Sea test kits for more reliable readings.

Unless something big dies in your tank i would not worry about ammonia. The amount of bacteria you have in that tank 10 months old, should make quick work of any ammonia.
