I understand that you should not use tapwater in the saltwater aquarium tank. I have ordered an RODI system to make my own. However I just bought a used 75gallon tank and want to test to make sure it works properly. Can I use tapwater to test it? And if so, are there any post testing requirements that should I should follow to ensure that nothing gets in once RODI saltwater is used after the test? Not in a big hurry so I can wait for a period after the test if that ensures all possible invaders are moot. Thanks.

Testing the tank for leaks and stuff with tap water is not a big deal. Fill it test it drain it and let it dry out and then use it however you like.

Thanks.

Absolutely, as a matter of fact you will likely want to sanitize it before putting anything in it. A tap water/white distilled vinegar mix is very effective and arguably the safest method to use, but if you are worried about some real nasty stuff, you could do a tap/bleach water mix and then do a tap water vinegar mix. NOTHING will survive the last method. Always make sure that after ANY of the aforementioned stages you drain completely and rinse completely, then wipe down and let air dry for 24 hours.
