Tested alk in LFS , BOY what a shock

I rinsed an old tiny urine specimen cup which someone gave me to transport corals...

Rinsed in DT SW.

took some to LFS, Salifert alk test after 30 mins was high. He retested again and was still 14.

So I'm used to API tests, right there i bought Salifert alk kit. Came home tested, it was 8 dkh. API test was 8.

Question is, has this ever happened to you guys what is the proper method to take a sample tank water for a test ? Tia

Wow. Now you have me head scratching. My Red Sea test kit kept telling me my alk was low. I went to the LFS and they said I was way high. I believed it because I came home and found that my 8 week old test kit had been expired when I bought it (0nline). So I drove my alk down and my tank went nutty. Now I wonder if the vessels that used to test at the LFS were not clean.... hmmm.... Tia, you may have caught on to something here.

I don't know if I could ever rinse that enough to trust corals in it.

I only use glass for samples, plastic will hold residue from soap or other chemicals. Just make sure whatever the lid is clean and rinsed good with rodi, transport so the sample isint in dirrct contact with the lid for best results

Saw it in BRS....What is better of the 2 with respect to ease, accuracy?

It's the same thing man. Just gives results differently.

One you have to multiply .056, the other just gives you the DKH directly.

When you got home and tested the water are you saying you tested the sample again or the tank water?

If you didn't test the sample I can't give a definitive answer that it was the test or the sample but I would suspect that it is the test and that the person at the store either did not correctly administer the test or has a contaminated or defective kit. The Salifert test has the option to do a low resolution test which results need to be multiplied by two which is one possibility that the store associate accidentally did the multiplication on a regular test or perhaps used one of the measurements for low resolution but I don't know how using 2ml of water and 4 drops of solution, or 4ml of water and 2 drops of solution would affect the test.
