I take it these are in developement/testing? I don't see them on Orphek's site. Any idea on cost and when they might be available? I love my BML's but they won't last forever.

I would contact them directly as pricing will be based on size and quantity purchased. lengths are 60, 90 and 120 cm. I added mine to my Orphek Atlantiks as I have older version. They can come with hanging kits or brackets to mount inside hood. I was looking at a Reef Brite until I seen price difference. They have 5 different standard configurations of nm range leds. The entire housing is the heat sink. the 120 cm comes with 36 3watt leds.

Thanks, I'll do that.

I contacted then about OR90s over my 72” x 24” tank. They suggested six fixtures (3 rows, 2 fixtures per row). Price is $870 delivered..

That seems like a very good price given Orpheks quality. I sent them a request for info on lights for my 48" x 24" tank. I'm assuming 3 OR120s. I am curious about the different spectrums.

Got the reply back. They suggest 4 fixtures over my 48" x 24" tank. Two Reef Daylight and two Reef/Violet Blue. They keep the price down by not offering the bell and whistles others do such as dimmers and timers. Price for the four OR 120's is $640. Gotta say I'm impressed. My BML's are still working good so I'll probably wait on these but I'd jump at these if I had the need now. They did say the lights would be on the website soon.

I sure wish more people used those diffusers from the BML lights.

I agree. I'm still buying up used BML's when I can get a good price. It's ironic that the indoor reefer growing market over shadowed the reef light market. :)

apparently so!

actually, they are considered to be the leader in lights for urban farming.

I'm not surprised. Their fixtures were top notch for our hobby and I really wish someone would have taken their place. Reefbrites, in my opinion, are overpriced for what they are.

I'm encouraged by Orphek's venture into the strip light. My experiences with BML and Reefbrite have been quite positive. The strip configuration solves a lot of the issues that come with puck-style lighting. No fans either, the weak link. I hope these lights are a success and other companies follow suit.

I all but begged one of their customer service people to advocate for making a reef spectrum of their RAY line of lights! Once I get a PAR meter in here, I jop e to learn that these Orphekjs are the real deal and fill that niche.

Assembled... one on tank. more to come. Merry Christmas to all and a great 2018!

Hi elFloyd & R2R.... happy new year!

I've been phasing in the Orpheks, a bit at a time, over the past 3 weeks.

I started by turning off a Sunbrite daylight tube and setting the Orphek daylights into the system... actually, laid on top on top of the canopy. In combination with the Subrite actinic and the BML daylight tube, the color way greatly improved and the tank was definitely lit more evenly... the Orpheks have great spread. Maybe a 120* lens

Some days later, I shut off the Sunbrite actinic and set the Orphek actinics on top. The tank looked great! Great color, great clarity, everything doing great! In fact, I would call the combo glorious!

Finally a few days further down the road, I installed the Orpheks inside the canopy (as well as the BML) and removed the decommissioned Sunbrites.

I measured a PAR increase.... in general, about 350 at a 7" depth, 250 at a foot down, and 125 to 150 at the bottom. Generally, PAR increase 25 to 50 across the board pending on the location, in comparison to the Sunbrite/BML combo. I also found the Sunbrites to provide greater PAR than the BML.

However, I have now, in this last position, noted a touch of "disco ball" with the daylight Orpheks, which was surprising.

In addition, the acticins are more a true actinic, in the vintage VHO sense, and are more purple than blue. And, in the lower position, the actinics are making some corals appear more green than they should, which again could be disco ball effect.

On Thursday I am going to remount the Orpheks in a higher position and measure PAR and see the impact on blend. on top

More to come!

Thanks PJR... good info. Do you think supplemental T5’s would be beneficial? I know it’s a hard question to answer. That may help with the disco effect or shadowing.

Well, when the lights were 2-3" higher, there was no disco ball effect whatsoever. So no, I don't think T5 supplement is the answer.

So, an update:

I have settled on three unique 6 foot LED "strips" or tubes under my canopy:

  • Orphek OR90 (pair of them, side-to-side, to create the 6' length)
  • Build My LED (14k configuration)
  • Sunbrite T10 (actinic, 36 x 3 w Cree)
I tested PAR on each again, and here's the summary:
  • Orphek OR90: 390 PAR at 2", 270 at 7" depth.
  • Build My LED: 260 PAR at 2", 210 at 7" depth
  • Sunbrite T10: 280 PAR at 2" 24o at 7" depth.
Given that this tank has been growing SPS like made for years under 3 x Sunbrite (and then later with 2 x Sunbrite and a 1xBML laying high on top of the canopy), this new combination is more light, more color, and at this point completely without negative impact to color or health of the SYS or other coral in the tank.

A couple of observations:

  1. The BML tested lower than I expected.
  2. The Orphek is a nice jump in PAR!
  3. The Red/Orange LEDs on the Orphek are a bit too prominent when mounted in the canopy (did not notice this artifact when laying across the top of the canopy). In a perfect world, I would try to find a lens to mute those colors a bit on 1 or 2 of those LEDs.
  4. The actinic Orpheks have great florescent capability! Liked them when mounted higher, but, when in my canopy, I did not like the blend (if anyone is looking for 1 or 2 really nice 35" LED actinic light, let me know! They are going up for sale and are easily ship-able). These really would provide nice color blend, especially if your lights are on the whiter side, or are looking to augment a T5 system, and maybe mounted a bit higher as I initially used them, but, when lower and in the canopy, they were a bit too much for me.
