Texas 180 half hex tank

So I was looking into the reef octopus skimmer and making a diy skimmer so the reef octopus has a 4" venture design to force air in with the water like most skimmers.

But what's the real difference between a dIY with the same pump and a reef octopus besides it being clear?
Here is kinda what I was thinking while I was at home depot 4" pvc

Would it be able to basically do the same job?

LOL, man you are really stubborn on this. If the performance would be so easy to replicate then everyone would do it.
Actually RO would use the cheap Home depot stuff as well.

Man, build and try, I need this skimmer to provide 1-2 cups real deep dark skimmate that stinks like easter poop like fouling eggs.
Your DIY will not perform with that efficiency. Material selection, surface inside the skimmer, no way to adjust the foam column, there is so much that steals efficieny.
If you really want to built something, just built it, as long you buy and compare the Reef Octopus !!!!!!

Picking up a skimmer tomorrow I know it's a bubble mags I'm not sure on the size of it yet I know it's rated for my aquarium/ bigger.
What's the next step once I get it going?

Give me the full details on the skimmer.

Well, as mentioned in an earlier post, install and run for a few days.
And be prepared as mentioned for excessive wet foam. Expect a few gallons, so have some water to refill available.

We need to test the skimmer first.

Great,
as soon it comes in, install it and let it run.
It might very likely overflow after a few hours or even minutes.

Route a hose to a bucket and catch out the wet foam that is being produced.
you might end up with 3-6 Gallons of very wet foam before the skimmer starts getting foaming normal.
This is due to the excessive waste in the water.

I will post the magic receipe you need to mix very soon, which you need Svedska Vodka (buy at Specs or Liquor store), Heintz white Vinegar and regular white sugar and a bottle of 0.5L that you can use to contain the so called VSV mix.
In addition you need to purchase a 12 or 16 ampule containment of "Biodigest". Amazo I found the cheapest ones. Keep in mind only biodigest, nothing else, no need for a combo package that also contains bacteria food, that is already present in your tank.

A few days after the skimmer ran nicely we will start the VSV dosing and increase of bacteria population and bring the tank slowly back to life.
I won't bring your tank to an ULNS status, but will significantly lowering your nutrient level similar to the Biopellet method, but more controlled.

So start looking into those ingredients.

Dang man what a great reef!
