Lets just start off in saying im no stranger the small bits of ocean. I have a 30g reef tank with all the coral I can want, an 8g evolve pistol/goby tank, and a couple of feeder tanks. I wanted to do something a little different from the other 5 tanks in he house with a 60g tall I aquired from a family member. So I started to think cheap. I had a bunch of store credit from helping out my lfs on the weekends so my rock, substrate, and fish didnt cost a thing. One of my only regrets with my reef tank is the limitations on fish with coral. So I decided to do a tank of fish I cant have in my reef because of coral nipping or the fact I dont want anymore fish in that tank. Then I started thinking about tangs and angels eating macro algae. I thought this would give me a little different challenge from anything else in the house.
I started this tank about 1 month ago and finally got all the parts so I will start up a build thread. Going the cheap route I decided to do a diy undergravel filter with 3/4" pvc run with a aquaclear ac50 powerhead. I cut eggcrate to fit then wraped it with a mesh screen. It was nice with the dry rock as I could change the aquascape around for a couple of weeks. Then added a nice 1.5"-3" sandbed of crushed coral. With live substrate and a couple rocks from my reef refugium I added 3 yellow line chromis to help what little cycle I would have. At 2 weeks in I added a argi angel. All fish are looking great. The angel loves the little bit of algae I have in there at the moment. I was working with some pretty shotty lights for the first few weeks but about ago I picked up a current orbit marine led. I didnt want anything fancy just something with some control as I love my ecoxotics on my reef with sunrise/sunset. I was surprised when I plugged this little light in and got it setup. It's powerful for such small diodes. It could grow softies with ease. I'm very happy with the set-up and how it turned out. I will update as the tank progresses. Happy reefing!
