The Angel Lovers Thread

I suppose not technically an impulse buy, I have managed to pair Regals, Emperors and of course Genicanthus in the past, so I have some experience with angels. These are my all time favorites angels so when 2 of the right size appeared in my LFS I just had to go for it and try to pair them.
Fortunately the LFS owner has agreed to assist and the fish were placed in adjacent tanks so they could see each other, the video was taken after they had been in there for a couple of days, they are still posing and fin flaring. Hopefully after a few days they will get used to each other.

My plan is to leave them in the LFS for a week or so, watch what happens to their behaviour, then if/when I'm confident i'll bring them home and introduce them at the same time to my tank so neither of them will have a territory. I expect some posturing, maybe a bit of 'handbags' till one assumes the dominant role and hopefully in time becomes a male.

They are beautiful. I hope you have luck with them. What size are they and size tank will they be going into? My majestic was very vocal with making the grunting sounds. Between your Emporers and Majestics your going to have one loud tank. LOL

The tank is 2000L (2mx1mx1m) the fish are both about 3 1/2". At the moment all it has in it is a group of 30 anthias of various species a few Bangii Cardinals, a couple of Timor wrasse. Hopefully nothing to stress them out.

Beautiful fish! Good luck with the pairing. I've always had he best luck pairing when one is a juvenile or just transitioning.

What a difference a week makes- they are much more relaxed with each other. Should be able to bring them home at the weekend.

I love the Majestics. Those and Emperors are my favorites of the large angels. I hope it works out for you.

Picked them up today I decided to acclimatise them together in one bucket other than a bit of flicking no issues.

And their home for (I hope) a day or so, a 100gall koi vat with some plastic guttering for them to hide in and some mature LR. Assuming I don't get any major aggression issues I will get them into the tank ASAP

I have been quietly watching them since they went in, quite boring really (thank goodness) One is already displaying dominance, and the other seems to have accepted it without a fight. The dominant one will enter the tube where the other is hiding. The subdominant one just swims out of the tube and goes to another one, the dominant one doesn't chase. I saw something similar when I paired Emperor angels, the dominant fish just kept pushing the little one off the food, but without showing aggression just reinforcing 'I'm the boss'.

Still early days though.....

Here’s 2 of mine fresh off QT

I also have an Annularis and a Flame, but both are very shy. The 2 and the flame were just transferred to the DT just 3 days ago. Annularis has been with me for over a year. I also have a juvenile Blueline angelfish currently in QT. Hope that it goes through QT well and grown.

I have a 120 gallon tank, 3” substrate DT.
A few months ago, I put Turbo snails in as part of the CUC. I noticed their numbers dwindling but credited that to less for them to eat.
Noticing the return of algae on the glass, I introduced another 4 snails into the tank...I believe they are Nassarius Snails.
I’m not sure but feel the Coral Beauty has developed an appetite for Turbo Snails.
The only other candidate would be the Melanuras which disappeared 2 months ago.
Is the Coral Beauty a snail eater? I’ve read they aren’t safe with clams, this isn’t too much of a stretch.

It is too much of a stretch. Angelfish are primarily herbivorous, extending their diet to some sessile invertebrates primarily sponges, but also some clams, corals and anemone. Snails are well outside their known diet. It would be hard to believe a coral beauty would eat a turbo or nassarius snail without actually seeing it myself. Perhaps an angel might nip the eye stalk off a conch but highly unlikely to kill a Turbo. Turbo snails are temperate and their lifespan is shortened by the tropical temperatures we keep them in. In general cleanup crews are shorter lived than the rest of our reef inhabitants and will often need refreshing.

It would be worth having a look around the tank after lights out using a red light. When the same thing happened to my snails polyclad flatworms were the culprit.

A quick update. I have reached a point where I can't see any advantages of keeping them in the tub any more. They are nowhere near being a 'pair' which is expected as given current expertise, they will both be females. They tolerate each other, one is dominant and lets the other one know. I haven't seen any fighting, although there is still chasing but the subdominant one still has all it fins. I haven't needed to separate them since they were put in the tub 2 weeks ago.
I think it's time to move them into my tank, hopefully the move won't disturb the status que and they will accept their current positions. And because there are other fish in the tank they will be encouraged to get braver and come out into the open more.

And with a huge amount of luck, as they mature, one will become a male and I will have a pair.

Thanks...It is a 240, 18" depth so not extend to far out...But, those pics are different times. My intrest in the hobby is to experience multiple types of fish and other inhabitants; so, I do a lot of trading and selling, and layout arranging...I have had very aggressive to moderate to peaceful inhabitants and I like them all, but obviously one cannot have them at the same time, and especially in a tank this small...I been bitten by Triggers, stong by a Lion, and even had fish to jump at me from the tank with no cover....It just so happens, now is my Angelfish and Tang phase; the Foxface just looks nice with them.

I do it to keep from getting bored with the hobby, and that's why I don't get into corals unless they are already attached to rock that I buy...My dream is to one day have an aquarium room with a 500gal, and 2 240 gal, but thatth not a determined goal, just one of intrest.

So we have almost the same setup: angels and tangs, a 240, except mine is an 8x2x2. Was supposed to go to an angel and butterfly tank, but then the first residents were tangs so I had to scrap the idea. Would love to have a french too. Looks like you were able to keep one despite an aquarium height of 18”.

Sorry for the lazy dimensions I gave...The tank 96"L x 18"W x 30"T, when I say depth I mean width from front to back...The French has a bold persona once it is use to the tank and owner...I did learn the hard way it is not a good idea to house both of those particular Angels together as adults unless you have about a 500gal; both fish like to be the boss, and which ever subseeds it will start to lose its bold personality that makes it stand out; they may not try to kill each other, but its a gamble.
