What’s the best tank size?

The best tank size is the biggest that will fit in your house and agree with your budget. This is a very expensive hobby.
I agree but what’s your dream tank size

6ft 180g pretty much opens a lot of possibilities

Larger enough for me... but not so large the Wife goes off like this:

Best for what budget, space and interests?

  • In studio apartment 300 gal tank would be not the best choice, space wise and rental restrictions.
  • For busy life or a very limited capabilities, large tank without hired maintenance company would be next to impossible to maintain.
  • Low tech small tanks are more affordable, fishless, because fish needs swimming space.
  • In the ideal world with no restrictions, the best should be part of the ocean with natural sea water, around 4000 gal.

This is more about your dream tank but realistic I agree

Back in the day, I would be for all for something huge. I wanted something built-in, large, all the bells and whistles, now realize that if I need to sell my house, I need to remove that big tank, re-build the wall, etc.

Now - I'm almost 50, my wife really doesn't want anything to do with the hobby, so it's all me. So I'm going with a 40 or 50 breeder size, something I can move myself. Something that can easily be taken down if I need to - and something that I don't need to re-build part of my house in order to sell it.

That’s smart smaller tanks are cool as well

A long time ago I started with a 55 and eventuall felt it was too small so I upgraded to a 75. Then left the hobby and when I came back I started with a 125 and now I really want something in the 300 gallon range.
So I guess I have no idea what my ideal tank size would be because everytime I get one I want a bigger one.

I’ve done the same thing haha

Even though the bigger the "better" I truly think a 1000 gallon would be my max. I think the maintenance is feasible with just me, anything that is almost swimming pool size would need an aquarium service company otherwise maintaining it would be a full time job and I wouldn't be able to enjoy the aquarium. Realistically I would like a 500, since I enjoy seeing the small fish, inverts other small organisms swimming between the rocks and coral more than I do a large fish swimming back and fourth.
