So I have a 210 gallon with a 20-30 gallons in the sump that has had water for about two months now. I have a small pair of Picasso clowns and very small blue hippo 1.5-2". They have been all very happy with zero issue so far.
My local fish store talked me into adding some chromis so I picked up 10 of them all small around 1 inch. All seemed very happy swimming and eating.
Night one I went to look at the tank before bed and all of the chromis were missing! After getting a flashlight I was able to find them all hiding in the rocks. So I thought well that's cool they all found a nice place to sleep for the night.
Next morning I could only count 9. I though well maybe he is a late riser and did some tank maintenance and cleaned the glass with my magnetic cleaner. The chromi may have either been hiding by the magnet and got pinched or was just stressed in the rock work and the vibrations in the water from the magnet drew it out of the rocks. Either way it was breathing heavily and did not want to swim. I netted it an put it in a hang on container and to get it out of the flow of the pumps and would replace the water every so often to give home a fresh supply of oxygen. He didn't last long and I had to have a little moment of silence for my first lost fish.
So the fish went to sleep in the rocks again that night and I wake up to only 7 chromis. No bodies to be found. Everyone was healthy and eating before bed. No signs of stress but fish are missing in the morning. I check the floor, overflows, sump, and filter and no bodies to be found.
I go and mow the yard come back in take a shower come back and now there are only 6!!! Do the best I can searching the aquarium but still no bodies to be found!
Two more nights go by and no issues. Until this morning wake go to feed the tank and 5 chromis.
I don't know what is going on! There is enough flow in the tank to move anything that dies out of the rocks. There has been no spikes in any of my levels and no bodies to be submitted for evidence.
The tank was set up with dry rocks so there should be no hitch hikers.
Only snails and hermit crabs in the tank besides the fish.
I did have some nassarius snails go full zombie on a Mexican turbo snail that was not able to right itself after flipping on its back. There is also one of the big type of nassarius snails in the tank that are really fast for a snail(the name eludes me). Could one of those just be preying on sleeping fish at night?
