The Cause of Your Crash!

Well, a lot of newer people in this hobby do not understand how important it is to go slow and make sure you have a backup or a plan for everything! Well, on that note, how about we each share our experiences with our most recent crash, how it happened, and how it could have been avoided/what we learned.

A couple months back, I had a partial crash in my 125 gal. This was due to the thing that causes crashes the most often... A heater malfunction. Luckily, my heater was stuck in the off position when I was gone for the weekend. If it was stuck in the on position, it definitely would have been worse. I came back and knew something was wrong... Everything was not happy. What made it worse is that someone turned my heat down to 62 when I was gone. Fortunately, I only lost 1 fish and a few corals. I now have controllers for my heaters, and I run a backup incase the one fails.

I wanna reefer people that feel controllers are just a luxury in this hobby, one of the biggest failures in our hobby are hearers unfortunately they fail, on position off position or get miss calibrated. My current titanium heater is wayyyyy off I have to set it to 90! To get to to turn on at 80 degrees I’m sure i can open it and calibrate it

I agree. They are needed in this hobby, especially when you invest so much in your livestock. Why not just invest $40 in a cheaper temperature controller?
