When my kids were younger, one of my son's favorite films was Sean Connery's "Dragonheart". In that film, there was referenced an "Old Code" of the knights:

"A knight is sworn to valour,
His heart knows only virtue,
His blade defends the helpless,
His might upholds the weak,
His word speaks only truth,
His wrath undoes the wicked."

So what's all this got to do with reefing?

I recently had occasion to assist a fellow reefer in moving some big tanks. It felt good to be able to assist, and it felt good to be with other reefers, working together to help this fellow bring his project to reality, and I got to thinking - is there something like a Knights' Code for reefers? Ought there be??

I would begin it with something like this:

"A reefer is sworn to the care of his charges.
His mind will seek knowledge.
His arm will bend to assist a fellow reefer.
His generosity with his understanding will help others' reefs to thrive."

What would you add?

@Maritimer I love that movie too. Great thread idea!! :)

I think so far your translation describes a different character though – the Squire or the Noble.

A knights sworn oath is to display:
  • Valour (bravery in the face of unfavorable odds)
  • His heart
  • His blade
  • His might
  • His word
  • His wrath
So how do the other crucial aspects of knightly "old code" translate??
(just making it easier to look at....refer up for full text)

I'm very intrigued by the symbology of the blade and wrath in this context.....crucial for knightly behavior, but how do they translate???

Would knightly behavior on these terms be popular today? Would it be allowed?

His Wallet Shall Drain like a desert stream in summer.
His Mind Shall Swim while chasing a mythic number.
His Hair Shall Recede like his Cheato while seeking needed slumber.
His Eyesight Shall Blur while discerning what shade of color.

Fascinating - you've taken it in a whole other direction than I would have imagined ... I was merely thinking in terms of a "code" for reefers to endeavor to live by today ...

When it comes to blades (or the even mightier pens), wrath and crusades - the current situation in Hawaii springs to mind, as does the eradication of cyanide fishing. Taking up arms against the many-headed dragon of ich, velvet, flukes and internal parasites requires a different sort of "blade".
