Another creature that uses fluorescence is the jellyfish. It also has a cousin named siphonophore. Siphonophore' s are alien like creatures and they use fluorescence in a different way. I hope you find this as interesting as I did!!

It works. Overflow is completely silent. Now to make sure that it doesn't overflow my sump.

Thank you! I really like the soft corals but I don't know if it would fit in my 10g as it grows. I also am unsure if the light in my tank is good for Corals. I've added a shrimp,2 snails and a little crab to my tank.

You are probably right about your light. I'll see ya on the fieldtrip to the Shedd Aquarium.
 
A generous member of R2R donated $150 dollars for one of my students, Cornelius, to upgrade his home aquarium. The donation was made last week and I was finally able to arrange for Cornelius and his mom to come tank shopping. Cornelius had never been to a pet store before and was like a kid in a candy shop.

He was curious about everything and his constant questions fatigued even me (and I"m a professional question answerer). There's a wide world of freshwater fish keeping out there and I'm excited about introducing him. For the moment he's going to keep his tank goldfish only. We were able to purchase a 29 gallon aquarium, water conditioner and have enough left over to allow him to by fish and consumibles for the next couple of years. My project will be able to donate used gravel, heaters, filters and decorations.

Special thanks to the owner and manager, John and Brady of Sailfin Pet Shop in Champaign. They frequently donate to my project and the guys who first schooled me on fish keeping.

. The stand alone refugium is work well and the increased water volume is already helping the water chemistry stabilize.

I can also observe some inverts on the chaeto that I don't usually notice. Many, many students have asked about it and it's been a good venue to discuss the nitrogen cycle.

Not sure if there's a correlation with adding the refugium, but the clownfish pair spawned for the first observed time. They did so right on the glass while my after school kids and I watched. Pretty cool.

This is a question for Cornelius. How is your new tank? Do you have fish yet? My favorite gold fish are the ones that are real fat and stubby. I like them because they are so cute when they wiggle to swim.

I can answer this one. I braved the snow this evening and helped Cornelius set up his tank. Just two gold fish so far but with two bio wheels and an under gravel filter he should be ready for a lot more soon.

Wow. That is a sweet set up. You boys did an awesome job. That looks so natural. I love it. Cornelius, do you know that goldfish do not have stomachs? At least that is what I read. What other facts can you tell me about them.
 
Hello R2R,
On Friday, we went to Shedd Aquarium for a field trip. I saw a variety of fishes and other sea creatures there. I liked the garden eels and learnt that they protect themselves from predators by burrowing in the sand,tail first. Isn't that amazing? Can they be kept in home aquariums?

I've been able to setup several jellyfish aquariums in new classrooms in my school. This one is going in to my school's art room.

The art teacher, Mrs. Barber asked for some information about her new jellyfish. This is my quick response but if any R2R members want to chime in I'll make sure it gets to Mrs. Barber and her students. And feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong.

Q: What kind of jellyfish are they?
A: The jellyfish in the aquariums are moon jellyfish. They live in both the pacific and atlantic ocean and grow to be about the size of a dinner plate. They're one of the most commonly kept jellyfish because they're easiest to culture and feed. FYI many people 'in the know' prefer the term sea jellies or jellies over jellyfish. Jellies are actually plankton (can't swim and move with the water column) and are much simpler organism than fish. Labeling them 'jellyfish' can cause misconceptions because they are very different from fish. I personally use the label jellies and jellyfish interchangeably.

Q: Can we touch them?
A: They can actually be touched though they're very delicate and it's something I don't usually let kids do. They are mostly made of water and tear easily. They are so delicate that air bubble's trapped underneath their bell can actually rise through their tissue, poking holes in them. Even strong jets of water can injure them. Moon jellies have very small stinging tentacles around the edge of their bell that you can see if you look closely. It's actually these tentacles that trap most of the food they eat. Some jellyfish have dangerous or deadly venom but our moon jellyfish have no venom because the venom is produced by the foods they eat and they can't get the chemicals they need when they live out of the ocean. Marine biologist actually don't know what helps them produce the venom.

Q: How do they eat? Do they use their tenticles?
A: The 3 or 4 long tentacles are called oral arms. There's ciliated cells (cells with little flapping arms) that push food up them into the jellyfish's mouth. The jellyfish is a very simple animal, even more simple than an insect. In relation to other ocean animals, it's more like a plant than an animal though they don't photosynthesize. Jellies have a very basic orifice (like coral) that is an entrance and exit for food. They have a stomach inside the bell where food breaks down and then the food moves through a basic circulatory system (like blood vessels) to the cells. When we feed the jellyfish you can see the food in the stomach. FYI horseshoe shaped organs in the middle of the bell are actually the reproductive organs, not the stomach.

Q: What do they eat?
A: Jellyfish eat all kinds of things and the shape of their body actually influences what kind of food they can catch or eat. We feed our jellies live brine shrimp larva called artemia. When we feed them you can actually see the artemia swimming around the tank before the jellies catch them. Moon jellies can only eat very small types of plankton.

Q: Can they see or hear?
A: The jellies actually have very basic eyes on the edges of their bell. The eyes are little white spots in divots around the bell. They so are basic they can only sense light or dark and are mainly used to orientate the jellyfish and help it know when it's day or night. The jellies don't have brains and don't react to what they see. They don't have ears. Hearing and interpreting sound is a more complex function and requires a brain and more advanced organs. Animals like fish and whales can hear.

Q: Do they have a brain?
A: No. They don't need brains because their bodies and biological functioning are so simple. Many animals actually do better without brains (sometimes I wish I didn't have one :D). The jellies don't really make decisions, they just flap around and eat. FYI they can't actually swim, the movement of their bells, called belling is more about collecting food than locomotion.

Q: What are the white balls in the aquarium? Students are convinced they're jellyfish eggs.
A: The little balls are filter media. The aquarium water is cleaned by bacteria that eat waste from the jellyfish and uneaten food. The bacteria live on the filter balls and crushed coral under that white plate. There are actually a number of invertebrates that live in the filter media including worms, copepods and shrimp that you can see if you look closely. They also help keep the tank clean. Adult jellyfish actually have a gender and the females do release eggs but they'd be microscopic.
 
I also found that the jellyfish art tank to be an excellent nano tank. Super simple to use and capable of hosting a large amount of biomass for what the tank is. I add additional crushed live rock under the filter plate and a small heater.

This last weekend I set up a JFA tank in a preschool classroom in my district. The teacher contacted me about having a fresh water aquarium and is doing an ocean themed unit. I stocked the tank with a pair of juvenile clownfish, a cleaner shrimp and a chocolate chip starfish. The classroom hosts 3-5 year olds, I'll be interested in seeing how the younger kids interact with ocean critters they haven't seen before. I made a request for them not to make Finding Nemo references. If you look at the bracket above, they already named their freshwater zebra fish nemo.

And we went to Shedd Aquarium!

I was able to fundraise enough money to rent a charter bus and bring 48 kids to Shedd Aquarium last Friday. Most of them have never been to the aquarium and more than a few had never been to Chicago. It was a very big experience for them and they had a blast (I was kept very, very busy)

I was so proud of my students both in their serious behavior and in way they applied their knowledge of marine biology. I saw many of my reef keepers closely study and discuss the displays, asking questions and making detailed observations. There were several adult volunteers stationed at various exhibits and my kids were able to keep fairly high level conversations with them.

There were literally a thousand other kids there from public schools across chicago and it was clear that most had little background knowledge basic biology. It's unfortunate that the general curriculum doesn't focus more on science. My little marine biologist were able to give mini lessons to other students when they were grouped around the tanks and even had the guts to correct some other teachers who were making incorrect comments.

Shedd as an excellent amazonian stream exhibit and my students had a ton of questions. I wrote a lot down to drive future study in the weeks to come.

I also like how Shedd incorporates decorative faux rock alcoves and multiple window niches for viewing the displays from different angles. They're oceanarium has a pacific northwest landscape. May of my students had questions about the rocks and coniferous forest and it's a biome very different from Illinois. I hope that they get to go to the real place sometime.

I also want to give a shot out to Helen, the tall young lady standing behind me in the picture above. Helen is a former high school biology teacher who's going back to school to get her PhD in marine ecology. She's been volunteering in my classroom and leading some of my students in a Banggai Cardinal fish investigation. More about that soon...

The reef displays at Shedd are clearly kept by professionals with lot more resources, but I am proud that our tanks contain some of the same coral and fish looking just as healthy and happy. My kids kept pointing to inverts and coral they take care of every day. The other visiting school children thought they were rock stars and my kiddos couldn't help dropping cool facts about what they do on our project.

We also spent a lot of time looking at the marine mammals and talking about the ethics of keeping large aquariums. Kids seem to have an innate sense of morality that extends to living things. Compared to adults, they are more likely to pick up on injustice and many of them commented on whether it is appropriate to keep the large beluga whales captive. From everything that I know, Shedd treats its animals ethically but it is another discussion that I tabled at the end of the trip but hope to bring up in the weeks to come.

And one of the best parts of the trip...the ride home. I was as exhausted as the kids and we all had a nice chill 3 hour ride back to Champaign.
 
The unsung hero of the trip was the R2R member chickofthesea (Cass). Cass has volunteered on the project for the last year and is an all around super nice person. One of our students got extremely sick halfway during the bus ride to chicago. They had never been on a trip away from home and was extremely upset and scared. The student lives with an extend family member that doesn't have a working home and need a parent to take care of them. Cass sat with the student in the Shedd visitor office the entire time and her cheerful attitude and motherliness was crucial to helping the kid feel calm and supported.
