The coral stock market has crashed....

I just feel sorry for you guys in the US, your frags, are what I would consider micro frags.
Sometimes it can be frustrating, but I must admit when you see an American System that's completely overgrown a lot of the times that represents the patience and hard work that it really takes to have a successful system. And it's so gratifying to watch a half inch frag turn into a great colony!

All these were grown from a little booger. And every day I see them reminds me of the hard work and patience that I've put into the system and it makes me love it even more.

Feel like this isn’t till happening in the zoa world! I remember when Rasta were a huge deal and utter chaos!

As others have mentioned, clams and euphyllia have held their value, going rate around here has always been about 10 bucks a head from fellow hobbyists. I love the fact that those with the money to burn buy up these over priced pieces especially if they are hardy and good growers, again, supply and demand. I've been waiting to pull the trigger on a fox flame and hope it continues to drop.

The only trend I would love to see go away is only showing pieces being blasted by blue light. Sorry but I dont have much love for a Home Wrecker or Walt Disney. I run my tank at about 14k, so while they still are nice coral, my personal price tag would be about 50 bucks but again, i hope folks keeps buying and growing them so that one day I can get them for a low price!

If you want to wait years to get something that's hot and expensive go ahead. By that time I'll have a nice colony of that coral and it would have paid for itself, other corals, new equipment, and allow me to be generous in freebies to other hobbyist.

This is Vivids insanity under white lights. I would pay the price for the pure beauty that mother nature provides and the gifts of God showing off his handy work. I couldn't possibly bring myself to think in any way shape or form this qualifies as a $50 frag. It is worth every penny. It's so much more than just the price, it's the hard work, the patience, and all the stories that go along with it that make these corals worth the money.
And a quick word about blue lighting, most of us do keep heavy Blues on our systems to show off the fluorescence of our corals and mimics what most of these corals come from and the deeper waters. I buy high end corals, and I am rarely disappointed between what I've seen online and when I get it home. If you can't tell something's been heavily doctered, then I think it comes down to buyer's responsibility.
Just 2cents.

Do you have a FTS?

New tank IMG_7369.JPG Old tank IMG_4357.JPG The hobby has come a very long way in the last 10 years. I will always keep some of the commons (Bali green slimer, Oregon tort, Cali Tort, miyagi Tort, ponappes birds nest). And I will buy what catches my eye. I don't think I would drop $1,000 on a frag but I might drop a couple hundo. I recently bought a wolverine frag. I remember when they were crazy high. But I bought it for its beauty and for a fraction of the early price. I'm not one that will frag a frag. I will always be the patient guy that grows out the corals. For me it's about recreating a reef in nature with even more diversity... The collectors and "frag o fraggers" have been great for the hobby. They've pioneered tank grown corals and brought many new hobbyists to game. It's all positive if we can promote the hobby!

Acans a 5-6 years ago would go for hundreds for just a head. I vividly remember some vendors here asking and getting 350 for a really awesome polyp. Some were arguably way hotter than others but like Rev posted, ANY acan(even the lovely gray ones) sold for top dollar.
Fast forward to today and you can't give them away lol We've taken some INSANE rainbow mini colonies to shows and people either assume they will be too expensive or automatically overlook them. We even stopped bringing so many to shows because we would leave with the exact amount we got there with and they were just no longer worth the real estate in the frag tank. It's to the point where we rarely pick some up from distributors because we will just be sitting on them for 6 months- a year+++
Even something like this is pretty hard to get any money for

This being a hobby though, thats how it works, there is always a coral that is "in fashion". A couple years ago bounce mushrooms(and mushrooms in general) were the "it" coral and right now IMO its Rainbow Tenuis(and those corals that get misidentified as "tenuis"). Maybe next year will be the year of the leather coral or something, who knows! This is what makes the hobby interesting and fun. Things are always changing and new corals are being discovered left and right!

I'll take that acan off your hands lol.
I have about 10 now. I love the color pop!

It's simple supply and demand people. A 'new' variant comes along and commands an absurd premium. If, as many do, it proves easy to grow the supply increases exponentially and the price falls accordingly. If one proves hard to grow, the supply grows correspondingly slowly and the prices fall only marginally.

100% was thinking his same thing and couldn’t agree with you more. Rare and difficult = pricy. As soon as someone else can duplicate it and saturate the market, it shows up in the $20 bin.

Assuming this post is directed towards me I will gladly respond :)

The point of this thread are the prices of certain coral that come crashing down, which more or less all SPS eventually do...at least the hot sought after ones that get bought, chopped up, and spread around. Case in point the JF Home Wrecker. Was it a year ago these were what, $1500 for a tick tack? Those same tick tacks can be had for $250. I would guess that the majority of those that paid that initial $1500 also chopped it up where it paid itself many times over, I never implied that money can't be or wasn't being made on them. With that said, are we talking about making money or growing colonies? If its the latter of the two then I'll happily wait a year for a fraction of the price and still have said hard work, patience, and stories...personal preference.

No doubt that Insanity is a good looking piece and one i would gladly pay more for than say a Walt Disney but here we are getting into personal preferences again. As for the blues, obviously they are needed to bring out some colors and everyone should be able to tell the difference between a doctored photo but not everyone views their tank in JUST blues, some folks do...you guessed it, personal preference.

Thanks to people like you it allows people like me that don't need to have the latest and greatest right away, you keep doing you :)

Love the bitcoral comment lol.

I can say I am one of those that buy the names Corals but them sell Frags when they grow out for much less then I got them for. Heck I even give Corals away if I have a lot of it to new reefers. I do however keep several to myself so that I have something in my tank that nobody in my area has gotta stay a little unique lol.

You can find them 20-30 per polyp in so cal.

Honestly, living in so cal (aka, real life reef central) it's astounding the prices people pay for things outside of my area. We got it all, and we have it at least half price. I didn't realize how lucky I was when I first got into this hobby being in my area.

I see live sale threads with BamBams for $10 selling like it's the deal of the century. I'm trying to give away literally hundreds of BamBams for free and nobody could care less. I've got 4-5 colonies of about 60 polyps+ and I can't even get a half used tube a glue for the things.

The only digi worth a dime is the Watermelon digi, but on livesales I see orange digi selling for like $15 -- Again. I'm trying to give away frags bigger than most vendors sell -- no takers.

To double down on what I said -- I didn't realize how lucky I was to live where I live.
You frag, I'll pay to ship. You don't want to throw it away and can't find takers... I can't find people who aren't lazy and willing to ship and spread the love. I always give away frags...

I remember paying $200 for a super small space jam stylo frag a couple years ago. Now, they go for what $30 bucks? Same with the burning Banana...Unfortunately, I think the Loony Tunes is right around the corner..

I think favias and favites will be the next "in" coral. They have a wide variety of colors, growth isn't so rapid it will take over the tank, and they are fairly cheap right now.

Acans are losing their thunder, not with me, just what I'm seeing on the sites
