So ice been back in the hobby for 3 years now. My girl convinced me I should have a passion of my on again inst of living for everyone else. But here I am 3 years later, questioning if I should end it. I've sunk aplenty of cash into my beloved system, work on getting my marine biology degree(again) but I feel pitted or that ppl, even her, are merely forceing themselves to stay around.
I think giving my critters and equipment away back to my buddy at the of a is all I have left to do.
What do you guys think? Should I just stop and ignore the advice of 3 years ago?

Find Randy Farleys tank thread.
Your not alone.
Thought about it this morning too.

And ya got a good girl there or good advice but for gads sake get your degree.

Glass dont go bad. btw

and stop typing worse thasn brandon and I plewase. Thats our thing:D

One goes thru love and hate periods in the hobby. I found many years ago that while I can go with out a tank for a few years I always fall back into the hobby again as it is part of my interest in science and technology. The most important think it not try to make your tank like someone else's. You need to make the tank for YOU. If you have an interest in Marin Bio. Make a species tank that you can learn about and study. It doesn't have to be a TOTM tank but it will hold your interest and bring you enjoyment. I was luck I started a aquarium club over 30 years ago and I enjoy leaning and sharing the hobby with others in my area. That to me is what keeps me enjoying the hobby. Many hobbyist spend to much time fritting over their own tank. It good to meet others and share your interest's so you don't get down on yourself. I also will change up how I maintain a reef tank. Trying different methods this keeps the hobby fresh and interesting. Don the many thing over and over again gets boring to me. I love to learn new things and new ways.

I guess it depends on your expectations. There's an old idiom: "It's about the journey, not the destination." Whether you get long-term enjoyment from this hobby is going to depend on how well that idiom resonates with you. You may never reach your destination, so that shouldn't be the goal. The journey itself needs to be enjoyable.

Therefore problems need to be seen as puzzles. Ya gotta change your head. Problems are no fun to have, but puzzles can be very fun, and rewarding too.

I've been keeping fish and other critters in glass boxes, rubber tubs, and holes in the ground for a tad more than 50 years. Have I done it continuously without a break? No. Have I always come back to it? Yes.

Sometimes life, passions, and desires will drag one away from the hobby, but in my case, I always come back. I just can't seem to stay away.

My wife was diagnosed with cancer almost two years ago. We knew that she was terminal from the onset and the tanks took a backseat while we dealt with her illness and tried to squeeze every ounce of life out of the time that we had left together. After she passed away, the tanks were a sea of green and while everything was still alive, nothing looked particularly healthy. The challenge of bringing my systems back from the brink of destruction is what saved me in those first couple of months. It gave me a sense of purpose and something that I could have a measure of control over. Of course, no tank could replace the incredible woman that I had spent 33 years with, but it did partially fill that initial void.

I guess that what I am really trying to say is that if you're not into the tank right now, let it go. Don't force yourself to stay with it if your heart isn't in it. At some point in the future, you'll know whether you want to get back into it. If not, don't sweat it.

Whatever you decide to do, make the most out of your life and don't forget to kiss your wife, tell her how much you love her, and thank her for choosing you over all of the other fish in the pond.

It kind of sounds you are trying to merge your hobby and career. If this hobby is an escape for you, then you shouldn't do this. Also, it sounds a bit like you are depressed. What makes you think your loved ones are 'merely forcing themselves to stick around'? Your hobby isn't for the enjoyment of others, it is for your enjoyment. If you don't find enjoyment in your hobbies unless your loved ones do, then it isn't a hobby you should continue.

well, im not giveing up. and from when i posted this a mass extinction has took place in my nano and its probly just fired me up more. all i have is a tailbot and a four stripe damsel(the first fish i had put in the tank), the really nice white anemone that i got thats apparently not bleached(i spot fed it and keep it great lighting for months on the hunch it was).so clean up crew members. and a frag of gsp, all other corals are haunting the tank with calcified corpses. the refuge tank also decided it was a member pf isis and the seal poped, i moved the macros to the display. oh and some diatoms decided to come back just to rub it in.
ya, i cant quit like that, if i leave, im going to leave something beautiful and healthy, not an accident.

im currently collecting nice decorative macros, such as: blue scroll, anything dragon, golden sarigras, pompom, ect.
also, any suggestions for additions is welcomed.

thank all of your for your support.
p.s. all parameters
are great.

I always find if there's a issue to just back up and remember the kiss method.

personally i think the cause was a sudden rise in phosphates and co2 from my fuge. that quikly got fixed but not before shocking the system.

im going to be breaking down the fuge tank and just save the pieces for something down the road i guess.
