Hi.

The exterminator is coming today to deploy Delta Dust (Deltamethrin) behind the walls in the kitchen to address a carpenter ant issue.

While this is considered safe to use around mammals, the manufacturer lists it as highly toxic to marine life and warns to use caution when deploying where fish tanks are located.

Delta Dust is deployed behind walls via small holes punched into the sheet rock. It is contained behind the walls and not something which is released into the room itself.

My tanks are set up in the den and the kitchen is directly above, which is where the dust will be deployed.

I'm relatively confident that deployment by a licensed technician will go off without incident, I'd like to know what precautions I should take.

Thanks.

Agreed with above, cover the tank with plastic wrap to help keep out as much as possible, and if you have a sump, wrap the stand so the sump is also enclosed. Run carbon and keep a close eye on everything to see if anything reacts negatively. Good luck :)

With the warm weather we are having, open the windows and maybe a fan in the window as well.

One tank is cycling. Can I run carbon there?
You should be able to, especially if you're only running it for the duration of your home being worked on

I used to work for orkin and I would suggest you cover your tanks with a sheet. That is all we used to recommend.

Okay!

I'm thinking I have to buy plastic drop cloths and tape the seams with duct tape.

But you're saying a big painting drop cloth draped over the tank and sump and down to the floor is sufficient?

That is all we used to recommend. Because the dust is going in the walls, there should be very little, if any, dust particles in the air.

But just to be sure, ask the person when they get there.
