Vortecs have been out longer, had many revisions of the product to improve them. They have a great controller and interface to the APEX. However the wart on the side of the tank is not aesthetically pleasing plus they are very loud (until this latest release).
The Gyre is a revolutionary flow pattern and a pump that is breaking the mold (kinda like the Vortec did all those years back). It moves a TON of water in a flow pattern very difficult to replicate with other pumps It is a new product and probably needs a year or two to work out the kinks and improve the product.
Personal opinion here, but I hate Vortecs but I also hate cords in my tank... So in the end I run neither one of these products at the moment. However if I was to pick one, it would be the Gyre.
