The Maelstrom 120

Ugh.

So, not sure how it happened, but it happened..... My bottle of Dr. Tim's ammonim chloride fell into my ATO bucket. I didn't realize it and out a lid on it and all was good (this was last night) . This morning I did my weekly tests and my ammonia reading on the Red Sea was maxed out. I though it was a testing error, so I ran it again. 15 minutes later, 2nd test same result. I went to refill the ATO and start the water chnages I saw the bottle of ammonium chloride floating at the bottom....cap off.

Sigh... I'm not sure what this will do to the tank as it's still empty. I had to go into work so I could only get a 25g WC done.

Any ideas other than just doing WCs? By my recollection the bottle of Dr Tim's had about 1/4 bottle left.

Really hoping it's not going to kill all the bacteria.

Oh no! That really stinks! I wonder if you could add something like seachem prime or somthing to detoxify it immediately and then remove via water changes.
edit: at least your awesome clowns weren't in there yet, could have been much worse!

I just realized I have a bottle of Prime, might text the wife to put some in.

Need to find dosing directions online.

I agree, big water change and monitor the ammonia levels. The last picture I saw of the tank I didn't see any fish as the clownfish seemed to be in a QT tank. When the ammonia levels are low you can always add some Biospira or something similar to boost the bacteria levels.

Thanks for all the replies.

Thankfully there's no coral or livestock in the tank. I was just worrying about killing off of cycled bacterial and resetting the cycle.

Being in public safety I can't just run home unfortunately, so I had my wife dose prime to hopefully level off some ammonia. I likely won't be home for a few more hours, after midnight, so I won't be able to do water changes till tomorrow. I have about 50g of RODI available to mix with.

Will report afterwards or if any changes happen in the meantime.

Morning uodate:

Ammonia reading 0. Tested twice with red sea. Nitrites pegged out (1ppm limit of red sea). Nitrates pegged at max (50ppm).

More water changes? Or see if nitrites get processed?

What sump baffles do you have and where did you buy them, setting up a very similar system and yours looks great about the only difference if I plan on running a basement sump probably different lighting. Thanks

Any thoughts so far as to a stocking list?

Kind of...the list is a bit dynamic lol.

Mochavinci Clowns
Tomini or Kole Tang
Flame Hawkfish
Midas or Start Blenny
Flame angel or Coral beauty - these are undecided because they can nip corals.
Bangai Cardinals
Diamond goby
Wrasse trio - melanarus, fairy and Flasher.
Last but not least.... MANDARIN! Much later.

I also kicked around the idea of getting a royal gramma or fire fish instead of Cardinals. Just to get more colors.

At this rate it'll take me probably 6 months to get them all. By then I'll chnage my mind 10 more times.

Just bought a pair of fire fish really dig the colors, very underrated fish.

Sigh, I guess I shouldn't have expected it all to be easy...

Long story short, over the last 3 days both clowns stopped eating in QT; male first, then the female today. Female has been seen flashing against the PVC fitting.

This is all after 14 days in copper @2.0 and 2 doses of GC 6 days apart. Not sure what to make of it all, but they're in a Rally bath now for the next hour then they go back in copper and start that cycle over again. My second (QT1) is set back up and dosed to 1.0 copper power. Then going to sanitize the tank and all the equipment they were with.

Not sure if there was cross contamination during transfer or what happened, but this is where I'm at.

Really don't want to lose these guys.

After a Rally bath and several hours of being back in copper, they are very lively and actually ate a little bit. I did notice some stringy poop from the female, not white, but kinda semi clear /cream color. So I made more gc/focus pellets and mysis/lrs to feed.

At this point planning on continuing the copper cycle to 2.0 then run it for 14 days then observation.

I bought two, they were swimming together at the LFS. One had a broken top fin, thought it looked unique so I had to pick them up.

Slowly ramping copper back to 2.0...so far they continue to be very active and eating well. Sucks they have to go through it again, but it's better than the alternative.
