The Mandarin Mystery

10 months ago I purchased a mandarin goby, that was barely an inch. He was introduced 6 months after my new system was set up and flourishing with pods.
About 2 months since having him I had to remove overflow guard to fit in a light fixture and I genuinely thought no fish would be able to get sucked into the sump...well I was wrong. After a few weeks without the overflow guard - I was able to change the light attachments and bring back the overflow guard - all was good! I counted all the fish and was missing the mandarin, checked the sump and he was no where to be found. Then I figured he must have died and was behind the rock work - he was quite thin when I got him.

6 months later during night time I was cleaning the ATO float valve in the sump and I see this giant 2 inch thing wiggling around in the sump I freaked out and thought it was a bristle worm that just stung me....I was prepared for the worst . Then as I look closer it was the mandarin! All big and fat surviving off all the pods in the sump! I was so happy and quickly captured him and released him back into the display! It's been 2 months and I`m happy to report that he's alive and thriving!!!!

Moral of the story, do not make my mistake and remove the overflow guard - something will make it into your sump and you will never know unless you look

whenever I add in a few fish, I am constantly paranoid about them jumping into the overflow when I cant find them for a day lol
